I was involved with the admissions as a student volunteer, so I don’t have “insider info” or anything of that sort. I have been closely following Pomona’s public data for a while, though, and semi-active on this sub-forum (though not as much recently). I had the question clarified way back in the past (like 2014 or so)- that line “This includes QB and Posse candidates” has been on the CDS for quite a while, so I can’t say with 100% certainty if that’s the explanation today, but it seems likely. As for how Posse works, I have close friends who were Posse students
I don’t know the specifics for grade requests and admissions, but I have looked at the ED threads pretty closely in the past, and @DyingInside is spot-on. There were some who got the request but were ultimately denied, and there were some who didn’t who got accepted. You shouldn’t read too much into it.
Also, just a piece of advice. It’s natural for students to see the admissions process as a reflection of their worth, but that just isn’t the case. I encourage you to watch the Amherst College admissions video, “College Admissions: Inside the Decision Room”, to see first-hand the subjectivities which influence the process. I would also like to post Carleton College’s letter to rejected applicants last year as a reminder of an important point:
"After careful review of your application by the members of the Admissions Committee, I am sorry to inform you that we cannot offer you admission to Carleton College. I know this is disappointing news and certainly not what you or we had hoped for.
Each year competition for a space in Carleton’s entering class is very keen. Many well-qualified candidates like yourself present fine academic records and strong personal qualities. Our large number of applicants and relatively small entering class size, rather than personal qualities, are often the reasons for our having to deny admission to promising candidates like yourself. We simply cannot accommodate all who apply.
As thorough and fair as we attempt to make our selection process, we may at times suffer from shortsightedness. Your fine achievement to date and in future college endeavors may well prove just how shortsighted we can be. The Admissions Committee thanks you for your interest in Carleton and wishes you much success in your further studies."
Your institution plays only a slight role in your becoming as a person. Keep your ambitions vivid and lively no matter where you end up.
Hi! I just joined, but I’ve read all the comments! I actually woke up this morning a reloaded my pomona application checklist and just saw a red cross and “awaiting” next to “First Marked Period Grades”…which I’m assuming is the Q1 request. I reloaded again and then the red cross turned into a green check mark - I think it’s because my counselor had already uploaded my quarter grades onto the common app because other schools I applied to were asking for it. I’m not really sure if my counselor had gotten an email or not, but I know if you received a request it will show up on your application checklist!
Looks like they are asking a lot of applicants for first Quarter grades. Maybe they have been burned in the past, offering admission, then seeing a decline in grades. I wouldn’t read too much into it. It’s more than onesies and twosies, so can’t have too much significance. Something you ask everyone means it special to no one.
i feel like they wouldn’t ask ppl who they’ve crossed off already, but I feel like a lot of ppl got it o.o but cc IS only a small sample of the entire ED application pool so who knows good luck to all! at least we know that decisions day is coming up pretty soon
I have my first marking period grades in the portal, but honestly that’s probably just because I sent them as soon as I got them. Private school student.
I’m international here as well. Our school doesn’t do Q1 grades but I know they asked my counsellor for my IB predicted grades. Any other IB kids out there in the same boat?
To echo everyone’s news here! I also got a Q1 grade request! (I was in the middle of a test and my counsellor walked in and said to go see her this lunch, how was I supposed to focus on the test after that?!!! haha)
I’ve always assumed it is a systematic, mass email from Pomona for grade requests but my admissions counsellor (Mr.Hart) actually personally emailed my counsellor. I am imagining how many times he had to change the name on the email, I feel bad for him, haha.
In the email, (my counsellor showed me), he said that decisions are out this Friday! So, it is official guys!
I am actually so nervous, I hope Pomona won’t hold me to my Q1 grades.
To what this request actually means, I have a pure speculation that they sent it out to almost everyone this year, seeing that all of us has received a request. Then, @preppedparent is right as in if everyone receives it, it is no indicator of an admissions decision. I am just surprised that the admissions committee has time to read and deliberate on so many applications in the short 2 days.
Actually you guys I just checked my portal, looks like they requested mine as well and my counselor just didn’t tell me… @Quiches you are probably right about everyone getting one. So excited/nervous!
This is the most active applicant forum I’ve seen yet so it’s surprising that the number of ED applicants didn’t skyrocket. I guess it just goes to show how much we all really care about Pomona! GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!
Hmmm… Something super weird happened. So the request showed up on my portal but my counsellor didn’t receive an email… Also my school is trimester based and I don’t even know if my first trimester marks will be ready to be send. What should I do?
