With that attitude @NebbyBag I can’t help thinking you’re headed for great things! Pomona’s loss for sure.
Deferred Congratulations to everyone that got in, that’s really exciting! I wish you all the best and, hopefully, I’ll be there with you in a few months!
Congratulations, @Quiches!
Second what @preppedparent has to say- you are all deserving people who will thrive no matter where you go. Never hesitate to reach out if you want advice, feedback, support, or anything of the nature.
@preppedparent Haha thank you so much! I’m heading out to a restaurant with my friends right now!
hello. new here but I have been following this thread for a while. just got my ed decision and…
defered
not really sure what to think. does anyone have advice? is this a bad sign?
Pomona does not believe in stringing applicants along, so there are not very many deferrals. As explained during an info session, a deferral usually means they want to see where your academic trajectory leads over the next 3 months (for better or for worse). They might already provide a link to this, but in case they didn’t, here’s the official deferral explanation from the Pomona decisions FAQ:
“We defer fewer ED applicants than we admit, so a deferral is by no means an automatic or thoughtless decision. It means that, while we were impressed with your application and would like to see you in the class, we have decided to consider your application again in the context of the broader applicant pool. Every year, we do admit students in the spring whom we defer in the fall. If you have been deferred, we encourage you to submit any new testing (SAT, ACT or SAT Subject Tests) and ensure that we have your mid-term grade reports. Although it is not required, you are also welcome to submit additional materials (for example, an art or science supplement, one additional recommendation or a personal communication with your admission officer).”
Rejected… Rip but it’s ok
Rejected as well. Life goes on. Hurts since it’s my second rejection, the first being from QuestBridge.
Congratulations to everyone else
Same here @176576978t
Congratulations to everyone who gets in!!! You guys are really amazing!!
As it turns out, I got deferred… but it seems that pomona doesn’t have a large percent of deferrals. I’ll still celebrate it tonight haha since I have put so much effort as well as passion into pomona… Hopefully, I can still meet you next fall!!! Best of luck to everyone!
Athletic recruit- accepted!
me too recruited but rejected
Awww, I am so sorry about the disappointment and I have no intention of offending anyone but how does rejection with athletic recruitment work?
I thought once you made an arrangement with a coach to apply ED and usually, you go over your academic and other parts of your app before, you are 99% guaranteed admission.
If anyone feels comfortable explaining, I’d appreciate that.
@Quiches Athletic recruitment at Division III schools is not quite cut and dry like that. While coaches can communicate with an admissions office to review applications ahead of time, these relationships don’t necessarily guarantee admission. At the end of the day it is up to the office and acceptance is still subject to academic review, disciplinary review, room in the class, and other considerations. This shifts from school to school, at some places going ED and being “recruited” mean you’re definitely being admitted, at other’s it’s more up in the air. What also makes it complicated is that students and coaches aren’t always on the same page about “recruitment”. Sometimes students think that they are being recruited officially, when this is not the case (not saying that’s true about any of the students here, just in general).
My son was recruited but deferred. I’m intrigued to see the take here on deferrals. I guess I thought it was very unlikely he’d get in through regular admission if he wasn’t picked in the ED, but I’m happy to here they defer a small group. Are any of you who have been deferred thinking of applying ED2 elsewhere? Also, any thoughts about Pitzer? Thanks.
I was a recruited athlete who was accepted. Since it was D3, I was worried about putting all my eggs in one basket with an ED1 binding, which meant I couldn’t apply to other institutions that would guarantee me admission. I expressed my concern to the coaches and they had it looked over by 3 different people to ensure my chance would be extremely likely: 1) director of admissions 2) admissions representative 3) athletic director. They all did a sort of pre read and all of them gave me “green lights”. Did the coach offer “full support” to you? I was told that my coaches could only push through 3 athletes…Best of luck during regular decision! Also, I toured Pitzer, too, and it definitely has a particular vibe. It’s very environmentally/activist focused, but everybody seemed super nice!
Can I ask the recruited athletes that got deferred or rejected if you got a positive admissions pre read? I know in D3 it is not as good as likely letter but am surprised at al the athletes here who did not get in.
Yes, my (deferred) son got a pre-read from the admissions staff that was positive. @runningrox12345, that was smart to get all three top people to give a green light. My son didn’t try to do that. We did not hear that the coach could only push through 3 athletes. hmmm.
Coach did say he was a highly recruited athlete. Perhaps not top three, though.
@jamamalv Every applicant has some vulnerable spot in their application, so no one is perfect, but is there anything you can point to to say maybe it was your student’s weakness? Admissions still has to justify athletic recruits as meeting admission requirements. Do you think his GPA or SAT was too low or do you think it was just they needed another athletic recruit more because of the position s/he played?
