Whoops! @enenalal I read your post incorrectly…
@wrenwu haha nope XD i made this thread actually, pretty sure i didn’t make a mistake did u apply ED1 too?
No - my daughter applied ED1. I’m shielding her from CC!! Although there is some great information, it is a very stressful place if you are a prospective college applicant. Good luck with your journey!
@wrenwu you are absolutely right! Although there is a lot of helpful information on this website, reading past years’ decision threads cause so much self-doubt and anxiety, fearing that we don’t measure up. However, I try to combat that by focusing only on the community threads, where we can commiserate and talk about our emotions in this process together. It is incredibly helpful to have a group of people who can relate to what you are going through.
All in all, I love Pomona, I love this thread, I love the group of people on here and you guys are already incredible people who will be amazing wherever you go to school!
What a wonderful sentiment @quiches! Good luck in your application process and good for you that you have such a wonderful attitude!
So ponoma average was like 2200 for class of 2022 and now its 1430 for 2021. Wow
Hmmm friday is almost here… maybe it’ll be this week!
Remember the early round of acceptances is often filled with athletic recruits and kids from the fly-in POP program. Don’t get discouraged with a deferral. Give your application some thought and be ready to provide updates for the regular round.
Does anyone know when would we find out the decision date? Would they tweet about it that morning?
@enenalal well, I just thought Brown was your average Ivy school with its catch being the open curriculum. It was all a total misunderstanding so that’s why I regret that I didn’t ED to Brown in the first place. If I had known that Brown was also widely known for being super progressive and liberal, the least stressful of all the Ivies, and having a big LGBT community, I would’ve ED1’d to Brown 100% and then ED2’d to Pomona.
@nillupa did u mean to say that the average SAT was 2200 for class of 2020, instead of class of 2022?
@IllIlllIIllllll aha, I see. yeah, I did hear that Brown is less stressful than rest of the Ivies, and the open curriculum does sound really appealing. I’m not really progressive/liberal (i’m pretty neutral), but I heard that Pomona is pretty liberal too (of course, nowhere near how liberal Brown is, I assume) Oh well…at this point, I guess the only option is to see how it goes so brown is ur first choice huh…a lot of ppl don’t end up in their first choice but still end up liking where they go to, so I hope it goes the same for u! or who knows, you might actually end up at brown…
@abx1300 and yeah-- the dean usually tweets it on the day of. it’s shocking to think that there’s only 4 days til decision day. i’m trying not to think about it, but every now and then, I would imagine myself logging into the portal and checking the admissions results… AHH. good luck to y’all!!!
@enenalal yes i meant 2200 for class of 2020 but 1430 for class of 2021
@nillupa aha, okay. 1430 on a 2400 scale is around a 2050 i think… wow, it dropped by a lot o.o I wonder why
@enenalal maybe because new sat is harder than people thought idk
@nillupa I would take an educated guess to say that a) standardized test scores are being de-emphasized as they are not highly accurate predictors of academic success and b) Pomona has increased their commitment to socioeconomic diversity, meaning that many students will come from low-income backgrounds where paying for expensive SAT/ACT prep tutoring is not financially feasible (and thus may have lower scores as a result)
For whatever it’s worth (which truthfully really isn’t much), the old 2200 and the new 1430 are both 98th percentile. For enrolled students at Pomona, the 25th-75th median for 2016 and 2017 are both roughly 93rd to 99th percentile -actually fractionally higher for the 2017, but again that’s not significant except that it indicates that there was not a drop. But, as you all know, numbers don’t really drive Pomona’s decisions. I’ve got my fingers crossed for all of you guys!
So what u guys are saying is that the scores really aren’t lower because the percentiles still match up and comparing percentiles is more accurate than actual scores
I think they messed up on their CDS. They’re supposed to convert old scores to new scores, but it doesn’t seem they did- they seem to have only reported new scores. If you look at their profile for admitted students, it says: “Median SAT scores are 730 critical reading, 740 math and 730 writing.” (https://www.pomona.edu/news/2017/03/17-pomona-college-receives-record-breaking-number-applications-class-2021). Which is in line with what it has been in the past (2019: “Median SAT scores are 740 critical reading, 740 math and 740 writing”).
I plugged in those medians on the Old->New calculator and got 1510 (750 EBRW, 760 Math). As previously mentioned by someone else, there isn’t much difference between the admit and enroll group, so my guess would be the concorded median for attending Pomona students should be around a 1480-1500.
If it is a 1430, that’d put the median for the New SAT at a 1380 (assuming 50% old and 50% new), which feels much too low.
The scores on the CDS seem to match what I’d expect of the new test with its percentiles, but they don’t seem to account for the concordance inflation from the old test. I’ll ask IR to see how they handled the old test.
@otisp Yeah, I agree. There wasn’t really a drop. Going from the old to new test makes analyzing this difficult, but if you look at the admitted group from year to year, it’s pretty much comparable.
Pomona 2019: (No New SAT)
The Class of 2019 is made up of outstanding students. Ninety-three percent are in the top decile and 32 percent are valedictorians, with another 10 percent salutatorians.
Median SAT scores are 740 critical reading, 740 math and 740 writing. The median ACT is 33.
Pomona 2020:
Students admitted to the Class of 2020 are academically outstanding. From high schools that rank, 92 percent are in the top decile of their class, 18.9 percent are valedictorians and another 9 percent are salutatorians. Median SAT scores are 730 critical reading, 730 math and 740 writing. The median ACT is 32.
Pomona 2021:
Students admitted to the Class of 2021 are academically exceptional. From high schools that rank, 92.3 percent of admitted students are in the top decile of their class, 30.4 percent are valedictorians and another 9.7 percent are salutatorians. Median SAT scores are 730 critical reading, 740 math and 730 writing. The median ACT is 33.
Meanwhile the racial and geographic diversity, as well as the percent of first-gen students, has gone up each year, as has the yield of students enrolling.
