My son has applied to a number of schools with January 1 deadlines, and now he is moving on to his next round while I get to work on Financial Aid applications. Most of the FA deadlines are February 15, with one notable exception: Pomona required the CSS Profile on Jan 1 (same as its application deadline), and then the rest by Feb 15.

Does anyone know why Pomona requires this one piece of paperwork so far ahead of its other required FA materials and so far ahead of everyone elses FA deadlines? Just curious.

Also, the Jan 1 deadline means that the entire CSS Profile will be based on estimates (though as accurate as we can make it). This makes me wonder: how much do they use that particular document in determining awards?

We emailed Pomona about this, and Mary Booker of the Financial Aid office responded:

“Late applications may still be submitted and will be reviewed by our office.”

So I think the Jan 1 date is a “soft” deadline. At least I hope so, since we don’t plan to file the CSS until the earliest of when we have all 2013 tax data, or the end of January.

What’s even odder is that last year, from the previous brochure, the CSS Profile deadline was Feb 15, and that date is even listed on the CSS Profile for Pomona. They also want the parent and student 2012 tax returns by Feb 15 if 2013 returns are not available. I am glad I looked at this thread!

Jan 1 is a hard deadline for internationals. I am given to understand that if internationals don’t meet that deadline, they are ineligible for aid.

I saw the same thing and we had to rush to send the CSS in on 01/01/2014. Just today, I checked the web site again and it now says that the deadline for CSS Profile is 02/01/2014 for regular decision.
