TLDR: I had a poor gpa for 2 semesters, am I wasting my time for hoping to achieve a gpa of 3.4-3.6 in order to transfer somewhere more prestigious?
My first year at sac state I got a 2.56 through 22 units. I got a b+ and a c+ in French classes and I’m fluent in French so I definitely wasn’t trying my hardest.
I’m at a community college in California now and am trying to transfer to a uc through a tag program. I’m interested in Davis Santa Barbara and Irvine maybe. The tag means I need a 3.4 gpa in community college to be guaranteed admission (3.2 for Davis).
To transfer I need between 60-70 semester units but I’m afraid sac state is gonna hold me back.
With 22 units of a c+ average and like 40-45 units of straight As I would have a gpa of just around 3.4. So I’m barely getting in and I doubt I’ll get straight As anyway.
Is there anything I can do regarding my poor first year at sac or should I just get mostly As and some Bs and pray for a 3.2 to get into Davis.
I’m pretty sure that’s not the requirement. It’s an overall transferable 3.4 (3.2) - some of your CSU units may not be counted, but most CSU units are transferable (and thus, they will count).
It’s possible, but you need to work for it. You can spread your units out (i.e. take 3 classes per semester versus 4 or 5) over a longer time period, which will make it more likely that you will be able to get straight A’s.
If you meet the requirement, then you’re in. There’s no “barely” when it comes to TAG - you either get it or you don’t.
All you can do is work hard. You’ve gotten yourself into this situation, and now it’s up to you to bring yourself out.
You can also have more than 70 units if none of your units from Sac State were upper division - if you had >70 units, then that could bring up your GPA, too (if you got primarily A’s).
Maybe you can see if Sac State offers academic renewal. I don’t know the details, perhaps someone on here could give you better information regarding that (or you could look on the Sac State website).
Depending on what major you are looking into, UC Davis is pretty particular about their GPA requirements. I know for Biological Sciences, each subject has GPA requirements of their own. If you are looking into transferring into the competitive majors, then make sure that you are meeting those requirements before deciding where you want to TAG.
Also, stop doubting yourself. If you try hard enough and if there is a possibility, then you can definitely do it. Like goldencub said, look into academic renewal, but again, there are requirements you have to meet in order to petition for that too.
