Poor High School Grades

I am an indian looking for higher education in USA. I got around 55% in class 11. I have decided to take a gap year.
I am expecting 90% + in my boards. I have an SAT score of 2290. Will I get any US college?
I have a quite a few certificates in Robotics and Computer Science subjects.

Also, I have an idea for an android app (around 20k downloads estimated ).
Is it any point to write that app in my gap year ? will something like that increase my chance ?

P.S.
I want to know if there is any point in even applying.

also, I can afford a max of $50000 /year.

Missouri, UT Dallas will look past that 55% in year 11 because they come with auto-admit plans that only make use of the SAT (UMO asks for 1700-ish and UTD for 1800-ish, and you have a 2290)

do I have any more options ?
is there anything I can do now to make up for poor 11 grades ?
I had changed my curriculum and it took me time to get adjusted.

what about university of texas at Austin?

@includeharsh you should apply to UT Austin but know that they let in a very small percentage of foreign applicants.

Other schools to look into:

(I’m including private schools which may be over $50k but may give you a merit scholarship for your high SAT.)

USC (Reach, but they love foreign students. There’s a whole dorm system just for foreigners)
Tulane
U of Michigan
U of Wisconsin
UCSD/UCSB/UCDavis/UCLA/USBerkeley (though some of these are reaches I encourage you to submit your UC app to as many as possible if cost isn’t an issue)
U of Indiana - Bloomington
U of Illinois
Penn State
Boston University
George Washington University

If computer science is still something you want to go to university in the US for, then try UMass Amherst too.

I have a gap year.
I can better my sat score.
what about 2300 + ?
and, what criteria are scholarships given on ?
what is the percentage of scholarships ?

@cataria
is it not a good course to seek in the US ?

I am not familiar with overseas grading so can’t comment, however your SAT is very good and I don’t think you need to retake.

Don’t put in your application that you have an idea for an app. Don’t put estimated downloads on something not built. That is ridiculous. Only put actual accomplishments. You can talk in essays about ideas if it fits your theme.

but I HAVE to take a gap year.
I just want to know if doing things like the app increases my chances.
(I will apply once it reaches 20k downloads, by august)

@includeharsh A gap year is ok. You don’t need to retake the SATs your scores are very very high. Take some SATIIs in your area of interest. Do some community service to add to your ECs. Include any sports teams or leadership positions you had in high school on your app as well.

I’m not familiar with your grading system, but I’m sure some american schools will understand it. Here’s a list of schools with the highest percentage of international students…
http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-universities/most-international?src=stats

From this list, I urge you to further research Boston University, Emory, U of Rochester, UCSD, U Miami, Columbia (but if you don’t have good grades it won’t happen), NYU, UC Berkeley, Oregon, UCLA, Rice, U Washington (Seattle), Syracuse University.

but i checked.
U of Rochester is 67k dollars a year.
thats much too expensive

your 55% will DEFINITELY hurt unless you give them a legitimate reason for that. If it is just the normal “didn’t do well at school,” you might have a hard time getting into the reach schools you want. On the positive side, you have a solid SAT score though.
