Poor sat score, will it significantly affect my application chances to the top school

I’m a senior

I haven’t seen an asian male get into a top-tier school without a 2250+ so far. Unless you came up with some treatment to cancer or something equally as amazing you’ll have a REALLY tough shot at getting in.

Im an asian male as well, got a 2250 and retaking march

lol I’m an international applicant. Is SAT THAT important?? I have a 4.0 gpa and all that. I have students in my school who get into columbia, harvard etc. with 2000+ but like 43 for IB and also extremely good recommendations and all that. My counsellor has been in the game for 30 years and I presume he knows best. lol he said those who inflate the importance of SAT are idiots

The SAT somewhat separates the drivers (those who study 6 hours a day) from the naturally intelligent. You may be one of the drivers, and there is nothing wrong with that. I am sure that you will get into a great college, just maybe not HYPS. It is still worth applying to them though! Your SAT score isn’t everything.

By the way, try the ACT instead.

Is re-taking an option for you?

If you’re an international, I would say chances are <1% with that sat. International admissions is 100x harder buddy

You’re a go player? How strong are you? Unfortunately it’s not that strong of an EC for an asian male because that’s who mostly plays Go. I play as well (1 dan), but since I’m a white female it’s more of a hook. Most of the schools you are interested in have Go clubs, but that can’t be the strongest part of your application. Like the others have said, international is way harder. I’d retake it, but will any schools you’re applying to even accept March SAT scores?

Your counselor advised you that getting a higher score on your SAT won’t help? I would be looking for a new counselor. For sure.
