Pop Up Spam

Do you need anymore screenshots?

Yeah, I’m getting these, “Congratulations, you have won…” pop-ups. Really aggrevating…

Screenshot: https://prnt.sc/fn3qts

The resolution to this is getting an ad blocker, or running an ad-block script for this site (I jailbroke my phone and currently running a custom ad-blocker I coded)

Ad-blocker (for iOS, not sure about others): https://itunes.apple.com/app/adblock-plus-abp/id1028871868

To enable the actual ad-blocker, you must launch the app and make sure it’s turned on, from there you to your settings app > safari > content blockers > (turn on Adblock Plus)

There’s no Adblock Plus add-on for Android devices, at least not the last time I checked, but there is an Adblock Browser you can download and use in lieu of Chrome, etc. It’s not the best browser out there, but it handles the ads and pop-ups okay.

Well, that’s a bummer. Hopefully they fix this soon…

Thanks admins! I haven’t had any this evening.

Guys, there was work done to fix the issue. Can you please confirm the spam pop ups have stopped? Thanks!

Ok, just sent spam screen shot in–new one today. :frowning: @CCadmin_Sorin

I got one this morning too.

I haven’t yet encountered a pop-up on this site today, so I think it’s safe to say it’s fixed? If it’s not, make sure to clear your cache and cookies by doing the following (on iOS):

Go to settings > Safari > Clear history and web data (This won’t delete stored passwords, but WILL log you out of your accounts)

I got one about 10 minutes ago. Not the “congrats” but “are you lucky?” I was not on CC, but it was open as a tab.

Thing is, clearing cache won’t work for everyone.

(Adding, geez, see the triple line pagination? I know that’s another thread, apologies, but it’s a live example, Sorin. The system inserted code for 3 line breaks.)

Now that i edited, it’s 5 breaks.)

I haven’t got one since I disabled the script yesterday, and you’re right, clearing the cache wouldn’t help if the pop-ups are still active on the site, which I thought it wasn’t anymore.

Edit: Scratch that, I just got one right after posting this reply (lol). I guess I’ll keep my script on until we get confirmation that it gets fixed. :frowning:

Just got it on the iPad took a screenshot… where do I send it?

Send the screenshot to admin@collegeconfidential.com @jym626

Just got it again, on Amazon Fire.

According to my tennis site (I had the same problem there) they needed the URL to track it so they couid block it from their site. Unless CC blocks it - you all will keep getting it.

To the poster who suggested Adblock - I have that on my iPad and it made no difference.

I also just sent one. For a moment, every time I brought up CC, it appeared. I did shut off my phone then bring it up, and right now it’s not butting in.

Ps. It knows I’m on a Samsung and my city.

When you connect to a server, you’re sending it TCP/IP packets, which contains your IP address and port #, and your IP can be used to determine your approximate location (no, it doesn’t reveal your address, at worst it can locate your neighborhood vicinity). You can’t prevent this either, as there’s no way for the server to send back a response (the web page itself) without knowing where to send it to, unless you’re use a proxy or VPN, of course. As for how it knows you’re on Samsung, your browser sends something called a user agent request header to the requested (although without consent) web server, which contains information about your operating system, browser, etc (not your name, age, address, and that kind of stuff though).

I hate to jinx my self but I haven’t gotten the pop up at all today…and I got it at least 20 times yesterday.
