Portfolio Feedback Appreciated

Hi fellow posters. My daughter is a rising Senior who is hoping to major in Interior Design. She's produced a number of art pieces in her Junior Year AP Studio Art class that we would appreciate your feedback on. Thanks in advance for your time!

I don’t know if she’s had Amby portfolio reviews yet, but more observational work is always encouraged

I helped my S with his portfolio and I’ve spent a lot of time looking at art but I’m not a professional at it at all. All I can say is that it feels like something is missing. Maybe it’s the sketchbook, maybe it’s works from observation. I can’t place my finger on it. It may be something very small but my one concern is that I have a desire to see her draw something that is just wild, crazy and original. Something without thought or rules, just a massive burst of pure, raw creativity. But I could be wrong, hopefully someone else can better articulate what I’m saying.

I agree with Madaboutx about something that is wild and original. I don’t think it has to be a drawing but something that screams her. Something that is a part of who she is. As for the actual content I think it really depends on the school, not to mention the fact she plans to major in Interior Design and not a heavy fine art like painting or drawing.

Thanks for the feedback on this very old thread. She’s currently at DAAP in the Interior Design program. Just started actually. The reason her art doesn’t scream her is because her instructor said that since she’s interested in Interior Design, she should focus on “bringing life to objects” in a room. That turned out to be bad advice because of exactly what you guys are referring to. None of the art really showed her in it. Essentially, while it got her an A in AP Studio Art, she didn’t impress the AP testers. AP Sculpture, the following year, allowed her creativity to shine through and got her the AP credit she needed to get a Fine Arts elective out of the way of obtaining a degree. She, however, still intends to take a wheel throwing course in the near future.
