Hey guys,

I've just received a call saying that I am chosen as a Posse finalist for University of
Wisconsin-Madison. It's great news, but I'm in a dilemma. I don't know if it's worth the risk to go to a school that is not as high and prestigious as many other schools I'm applying to. That being said, I am not sure if I would get into other schools that I'm applying RD to. But once I confirm with Posse I want to continue the process, then I have to go through to, and if accepted to Wisconsin, I can't back down. What are your thoughts? I want to go to a good graduate school for sure, but does having a Posse scholarship make a big difference even if I didn't go that great of a school? Also, for any of you who are more aware of Posse, do you know if you are just accepted as a Posse finalist, does that mean you are in their database for other colleges to search for?

You got a phone call? My son is waiting to hear also and has not gotten any notification. Congratulations! But, if you seriously do not want to attend UW Madison, then please give it up and let another student have a chance at the scholarship.
What other schools are you considering?

University of Wisconsin is a terrific flagship university. And getting the Posse pays the bills. This should not prevent you from getting into a “good grad school”.

Oh goodness, Wisconsin is a top 50 university in the country…it’s not going to hold you back. In the big 10, Wisconsin is right in there with Northwestern and Michigan. Madison is a great college town…what more do you want/need? If money is no concern and you can afford to go wherever you want at whatever cost then for sure, give up the scholarship contest. Most kids and parents are not int he enviable position of being able to chance giving something valuable up in the hopes that someone else will come along with the same or better offer. But if you are thinking that Wisconsin is a some second rate rural university in the boondocks you are sadly misinformed and need to spend some time doing some research.

And momofthreeboys, like I said, I’m just thinking about my options and I’m under pressure as I had to decide within 24 hours since I got the call. So I was nervous, and I didn’t want to make a mistake. But thank you for your input; like I said I already researched and knew the basics of the school and the fact it was a top 50 school. But there’s a difference between a top 25 and 50 school, so of course compared to others Wisconsin is not “that great” using my exact words. Once again, I appreciate your input but don’t assume I haven’t researched- I didn’t think I needed to put all what I know about the school to prove my knowledge of the school.

Thanks for all your input; I appreciate all your views.

Oh, and Rousse54, I actually got the call yesterday, but they’ve been calling since Monday- I just missed their call. I think LA Posse got informed this week. I hope your son did well! I was just really nervous this morning as I had to tell them my decision in the afternoon, so I was trying to figure myself out this morning. But I’m going through with it because it was just a rash impulse for me to be afraid after reading about something else.

Well, congratulations again…My son has not gotten a call. So of course we are disappointed. He really is interested in UW Madison, it has a lot to offer him in his major field of study… And the chance to compete for the scholarship would have been great. He did call the Posse people and they did say calls can continue to come through the next few weeks. Some of his friends have heard for other schools, one with excellent stats accepted UCLA, another one with great stats got put on his second choice which he is turning down. My son still has a chance, but who knows? Interestingly, my son has better stats than you…but your extracurriculars are probably better. Are you a URM by any chance, if you don’t mind me asking?

Maybe in YOUR mind. In the top 25 from the usual list are Northwestern, UCLA, UCB, Notre Dame, USC. I’d say Wisconsin is right there.
