Posse Scholarship

I just read about this Posse Scholarship in an article online and it sounds fantastic. My daughter is a student in the IB program at her school, her grades are fine, but she is not the best test taker. It says online that the students are usually nominated by a teacher for this scholarship, OR the student can self-nominate. My question is: how will they see her self-nomination? Is it going to give her an equal chance? or do they mostly take into consideration the students who have been nominated by their school?

thanks in advance for your input

I just found out about this program and it sounds really great, but I don’t really know how it works. Unfortunately, my school has not nominated me. I researched the program a bit and found that you can Self-Nominate and I was wondering if it was too late to do so? I’m a rising senior.

What program?

The Posse Scholarship… i guess its not a program per se, it’s a foundation. My bad haha

For Posse, you must be nominated by a school of a community based organizations. Nominations for rising seniors takes place in the spring of junior year.

have you tried questridge?

Posse’s website does not say anything about self-nomination.

“To be eligible, a high school senior MUST:
Be nominated by their high school or a community-based organization.”

No, but i will be sure to look into it. Thanks!

My son is a Posse Scholar who will be a sophomore this year at the University of Wisconsin Madison. Most students are nominated by their high school guidance counselors, previous Posse Scholars at their schools, and I think it is possible to self-nominate. The applications are sent in late in the junior year and the evaluation/selection process begins early in the senior year of high school. In order to be considered, you must live in or around the following cities: Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New Orleans, New York or Washington, D.C. If anyone needs any further information about the Posse Foundation, please PM me. The Posse Foundation is an incredible organization!

DD and I did an open house @ Connecticut College in April. We ran into 2 AA(science/pre med) students who loved being Posse Scholars. One was from Chicago. The other from the Bronx…very smart, interesting young women.

I wish DD was able to be nominated…they really need to branch out. Good luck to you! Give them a call/email them! Timing is everything with these programs…

Posse isn’t in every city/community. The idea behind the organization involves sending a group of students from the same area to the same school. So your first step is seeing if Posse is even in your community. Are you in Miami? area? (I think you are in Florida).

NewHavenCTMom: Just to address your question about why there are not more Posse cities around the country. They are trying. In the last few years they have added both New Orleans and Houston. We were told by a Posse staff member, that in order to open a new office in a new Posse city, they must raise at least one million dollars to open the office. The Posse offices get most of their donations from major corporations and donors, and it is those donors that allow them to open more offices across the country.

Why do they need to open an office in every “Posse” city?

Yes, I figured money played a part in it…hopefully more sites will be funded.

The program includes a pre-college component second semester of senior year as well-- between that and fielding applications second semester, the office is probably necessary.

[Pre-Collegiate Training ? The Posse Foundation](http://www.possefoundation.org/about-posse/program-components/precollegiate-training)

My daughter will be attending Northwestern University through the Posse Foundation. The office is used for the weekly meetings over a six month period that the Scholars attend. The meetings are held to facilitate the bonding of the Posse.

The office is also used for the evaluation of the next future Posse Scholars. And as the posters above stated, for the weekly pre-collegiate training each Posse Scholar undergoes for 8 months prior to attending their freshmen year of college.

I don’t think anyone has mentioned that this scholarship is NOT based on need.

To qualify you most come from one of the urban cities (I know of a student making a commute of 90ish miles, one-way, for the program), have incredible leadership skills and have the academic qualifications to succeed/graduate from the school you are matched with (that is the point of the program).

Also keep in mind, that Posse is a full tuition scholarship only. Student will still have to apply to financial aid, if they require need based aid, for room, board, fees, etc. The school, still determines if the student is eligible for need based aid.

I was nominated but I have no idea about the application process and its summer :frowning: getting nervous :c

@Marrissa - I would suggest that you not be at all shy and contact the Posse Foundation. Explain that you have been nominated but that you are not clear as to whether you should be doing something specific to further your nomination. Here is a contact page. http://www.possefoundation.org/about-posse/locations</a> If you are not in a city where they have an office, I would say call or write the closest one.

Let us know what you find out. The information will be valuable for others in the future.
