AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. — The Air Force Academy says 84 cadets with flu-like symptoms have been isolated and are being tested for swine flu.

Academy spokeswoman Capt. Corinna Jones told The Gazette in Colorado Springs on Thursday that most of the cadets are “doolies,” members of the incoming freshman class who began training June 25. She said the cadets under isolation in a dormitory began coughing and showing other upper respiratory symptoms over the past two days.

The academy has contacted the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Air Force surgeon general’s office.

Jones says tests have been sent to a laboratory in San Antonio for analysis, and results are expected within 24 hours.

flying tigers and guts.

way for this to be kept hushed :)

foxnews, msnbc, its everywhere

If any senior cadets posting have any updates on the status of Doolies Day out or any thing else regarding the “mystery illness” feedback would be appreciated. Parents have not been given any info. We don’t even know if our kids are sick. We are sure they are fine–even if they are one of the unlucky ones–it would just be nice to hear from them if that is the case. Seems kind of silly to not make a statement or something. Leads to a lot of speculation…which is much worse.
Thanks!

the article was released when a spokesperson from the academy made the statements that were quoted. as for names, they have no need to release that. each basic cadet here is an adult and has authority over him/her-self.

as for Doolie Day Out, if for some reason things change then it will be made known. as for now, i’m looking forward to sending them away Saturday so i can get out of here! they put on their blues for the first time tonight, so we still have some work to do on that front ;)

Nope–would not expect Academy to release names—that would be a HIPAA violation–(I am a nurse–we have more acronyms than you do  just was wondering if our basic cadet became ill–would they be allowed to inform their parents.
Good news so far about DDO though. Thanks for the update. I know getting “dressed” was always a challenge for my son. Good Luck with that!!!

as far as i know they won’t. however your basic cadet should be able to tell you Saturday with DDO. so i know its a long time, but wait another 1.5 days and you should know.

Rancher, that depends on whether or not your basic signed a release of information agreement. Naturally, that is left to each of them to decide for themselves.

No worries, though, parents. Your kids are fine.

I was wondering if the kids are sick for more than just a day or two, will they have a medical turnback or will the Academy make some adjustments to that policy? I would think if it is swine flu or other influenza or influenza-type illness, these basics could be pretty sick for several days.

I think it would be too many cadets to turn back so they will probably make adjustments. at this point it would be @7% of them, and historically 5% leave during BCT, so if 5% go and they have an additional 7% medical turnback that would shrink the size of 13 real quick. Then of course you have the issue that 14 BCT would be bigger because of these turnbacks

13’s already a huge class, they’ve gotta whittle em down somehow :)

just kidding, of course, but 13 really is big

There were students in SS that were reported with the swine flu. We were ordered to wipe down the dorms.

I believe they came from the West Point SS where H1N1 was first discovered in a small group of students.

Any chance of that being the cause?

Swine flu confirmed:

DDO is canceled, so they will have stuff here for the basics.

It’s the flu. It makes you sick for a couple days, then you feel better. This one just spreads faster than normal.

Some of the sick ones are returning to their flights already.

They won’t be out long enough to turn them back. If memory serves me right, it’s 8 days or something of missed training before they start talking about turning basics back. And yeah, I’ve read that they shouldn’t be sick for too long.
