I only got a 700 on SAT Writing with a 9 essay (I got a 750 CR and a 720 M and I did not take it again but I wish I had...) and I've recently read that colleges look at the essay score as a "validity check" to your admissions essays. I found this very disheartening because I consider myself a very strong writer despite my lousy scores and I really put a lot of effort into the essays for each school I applied to. Now I feel like all that was for nothing because they'll think I'm a phony with that SAT writing score. My question is has anyone gotten into good schools with a bad SAT writing score?? Is it even possible?

700 hardly qualifies as a ‘bad’ score.

Is it lower than your CR and M and what you expected/wanted? Yes.

But bad? No.

Try to keep some perspective as you go through the admissions process, it will serve you well.

What about the essay subscore though? I’m worried they’ll look at it in relation to my essays and think that I somehow faked my admissions essays…

Some (many? I don’t know for sure) schools don’t look at the W score at all, Georgetown being one of them. So perhaps you can find some of those types of schools, but 700 is not a low score at all.

Hey! I have the same question, except that my SAT writing score is REALLY abysmal (540, 10), but all my essays are very good (I have confirmed with many people, and a very popular online forum). Will this lead colleges to suspect that I took outside assistance for writing my essays?

I don’t think there are many schools that say that they use the SAT essay as a “validity check.” Hardly seems it would be useful for that purpose, since it only shows your ability to write a 25 minute essay on a topic you have never seen before and on which you are given no facts. Very different from an essay you can think about and work on for as long as you want.

Don’t give it a second thought. This is really worrying over nothing.

It’s a great score and some colleges don’t even care for the essay because they know that a student could not possibly write an amazing essay in 25 minutes.
