Possible to Switch Major To Business-Econ (or Comp-Sci Double Major)? (Freshman Admit)

Hello Everyone,

I was recently accepted to UCLA, and I was looking at my application that I sent (4 or 5 months ago) and saw that I was admitted to the College of Letters and Science, but not as a Business Econ Major (but rather a completely unrelated field which I, at the time, thought would be a good idea).

My question is, are there any barriers to me switching into the Business Economics B.A. at CLS or can I just declare that as my major? Furthermore, would it be possible to double major with this and a B.S. in computer science (at the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science), and if so, how hard would it be to do that?

Sorry in advance if these questions are in any way ignorant, I am just concerned about what my plan would be should I choose UCLA.

Overall, I am interested in Computer Science and Business.

Thank You

Also, I tried to find this info on their website,

http://www.seasoasa.ucla.edu/admissions/undergraduate-admissions/

but the “Change of Major to HSSEAS for current UCLA students” link is broken.

Switching from the college of Letters and Science to the school of engineering would be rather difficult. Switching within the college of Letters and Science should be fairly easy. Some majors in the college of Letters and Science have some extra requirements but I don’t believe biz-Econ is one of them.

Thank you. Do you know what exactly my chances are of making it through? Over 50%? @person415

I read somewhere that you cannot change your major to Biz-Econ even if your already in Arts and Sciences. Can anyone confirm or debunk this?

@AnneFrankenstein, I’m not sure myself, but I would read this website for more information:
http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/catalog/uclacatalog14-15-288.htm

From the link above, I see that there is a specialization in computer science that Economics majors can choose. I am surprised to read that, since when I phoned the academic advising office this morning to ask if it was possible for him to take computer science courses as a Geography major, I was told that would not be possible, and that computer science was only open to students in the Applied Sciences and Engineering school, with no minor available .

I assume you are a frosh. Neither you nor any other frosh can be an actual Biz-Econ major. To get into Biz-Econ you need to satisfy the pre-major requirements, then apply. Any student can enroll in all of the pre-major classes. Although if you want pre-biz-econ listed on your records its just a matter of filling out a form. See http://www.econ.ucla.edu/undergraduate/majors/bizecon.cfm for more info

For the double-major, see http://www.seasoasa.ucla.edu/undergraduates/chmaj/ls-to-engineering

Call the CS dept and ask how many try and how many succeed.

When you get accepted into L&S, you technically haven’t declared any major and can thus take any classes you want to regardless of what major you applied for. Therefore, if you want to do biz econ, just take the prereq classes and apply for the major directly. Your admitted major won’t stop you from getting into biz econ.

Getting a double major in CS is a whole different story. You need a 3.5 after taking CS 31, 32, and a few other math and science classes to even have a chance of getting into CS. Since the average CS/math/science prereq class is curved to a B- (a 2.7), having a 3.5 means you need to be above average. Moreover, CS in and of itself has ~180 required units, so doing a double major between that and biz econ will be very difficult since you’re going to be coming very close to reaching the 216 unit max. Also, getting all the classes you need will be very difficult and graduating in 4 years will be really hard. If you want to do CS+business (and you manage to switch into CS), consider majoring in CS and minoring in accounting or entrepreneurship

tl;dr
no problem with biz econ, cs+biz econ won’t work

LOL at tl:dr

So then if I’m set on CS and Business is the USC Trustee a better option then really?
