Possible to take General Education Classes at Community College if enrolling in Fall

Hi. I wanted to know if it is possible to take general education classes over the summer at a community college and then transfer credits to USC if I am enrolling for the first time as a freshman in fall 09? What kind of classes could I take

Thanks for the help!!

Yes but only certain classes (not all categories) and you must get it pre-approved by USC even if the classes are on the articulation agreement. Look at the big USC thick catalogue about this. Great way to save some tuition money.

[USC ARR : Articulation](Transfer Credit Services - Office of Academic Records and Registrar)
You can take Cat 1, 2, 3, and 5 at a CC but must be done before coming to USC
Diversity, language, other reqs (like econ for business majors) can be done even after entering USC
Cat 4, 6, and writing must be done at USC

Be sure to check that doing this will not affect any merit based scholarships. At our State U we were warned that if a student had AP credits and went to CC the summer before starting then the combination of AP credits (or college classes taken concurrently in HS) plus the summer classes could change the students status to a transfer student making them ineligible for freshman scholarships they had been awarded. May not be the case in your school but check to just in case.

As a freshman, you can bring in 32 transfer units in by APs and CCs. This helps bump up your registration time (which is done by number of units). Your record may say sophomore when you are actually a freshman but you shouldn’t be considered a transfer.
Feel free to double check :)

I am not absolutely sure about this, but it was my understanding that the 32 unit AP + CC class limit was for units earned BEFORE high school graduation.

A community college classe pre-approved by USC and taken the summer after high school graduation might be in addition to that limit.
