Hello all,
I was admitted into my top-choice school a while ago, however I realize that I overestimated the hours on one of my ECs. It was a summer job that I mistakingly said I worked for 8 weeks per year for 40 hours each when I think now it is more along the lines 6 weeks per year for 15 hours each. This is around a 200 hr /yr overestimate and I feel really terrible, and am scared of getting my admission rescinded. Even though this EC was probably very minor in my decision I still feel bad, should I notify admissions?
Think carefully about how to notify the school by voice. Say that you over estimated work hours because you calculated based on a year. So, you made a reasonable, but incomplete calculation. Tell them how thrilled you are to be accepted and will accept with enthusiasm and ask how the incorrect estimate of work hours will affect acceptance. I agree that the incorrect hours will have little impact in the scheme of things. That is better than the school happening on the discrepancy. Depending on your commentary, they at already have found out and thought it was irrelevant to the admissions decision. Either way, it will be a relief to no longer worry and if the worst happens, you have other alternatives.
No, don’t. At this point it’ll annoy Admissions which certainly didn’t admit you because it was x number of hours but because of what you accomplished. If you lied on the actual achievement and it’s verifiable, then yes you’re in trouble, but the number of hours, at this point, doesn’t matter (and didn’t matter much in your application either).
VERY doubtful that this honest miscalculation on your part would make any real difference in their decision. Don’t worry about it and enjoy your first choice school!
Absolutely do not contact them. They are not checking. Congratulations on your acceptance.
Thanks for your comments guys! My worry is reduced, though I’ll definitely be more careful next time.
You are fine. Read this, laugh, and keep up your grades for the rest of the semester.
There’s no need to tell them, it would not make a big difference in your application. Congrats!
