Martel's facilities are excellent. I don't see why anyone would consider it to be "hard" on either side of campus -- it's still Rice for goodness sake. :-)

Martel's culture is still a little rough since it's by far the newest of the residential colleges. The other colleges tend to give Martel a hard time as the new kid on the block, but it's really just a bunch of smoke -- they're jealous because you can actually control the temperature of your room, among other things.

I was one of the "founding" members of Martel after originally coming from Will Rice. There were good and bad qualities about both colleges and, honestly, I'm torn between which of the two I preferred.

One often overlooked perk of the north colleges: less noise from Main Street/Med. Center and their perpetual construction. The north side of campus is rather quiet.

I'm in Lovett too, and admittedly, I'm not thrilled either...especially since I'm not a partier. But from what other people have posted on this board, Lovett doesn't sound half as bad as some people make it out to be. Is it far from everything on campus? Does anybody know how the rooms are?

that has a basic description.. i wonder if theres pictures of them online somewhere. hmm i live in houston. do you think they'd let me drive down and check em out? :)

Baker, Will Rice, Hanszen [2-4 floors, no elevators]:
Older rooms are singles/doubles with common bathrooms for each floor.
The "newer" additions to the buildings, if any, are quad-occupancy suites with double bedrooms and a common room. Each bathroom is directly connected to two suites, so 8 people per bathroom.

Sid Rich [14 stories, 7 floors, two elevators]:
Double occupancy rooms with two rooms per bathroom; common entryway (not living space) between the two rooms and the bathroom. Not sure if singles are available.

Lovett [6 floors, one quasi-elevator]:
Double occupancy rooms with one bathroom per two rooms, again not certain if singles are available.

Martel & (New) Wiess [4 floors, at least 2 elevators]:
Double- and single-occupancy bedrooms in configurations of 4 or 6 people per suite, each suite has its own bathroom and common space.

Jones North & South [4 floors each, 1 elevator each]:
Double- or single-occupancy open rooms with two bathrooms per floor, male and female.

(Old) Brown [8 floors, 2 elevators]:
Same configuration as Jones North & South

Jones Central & Brown (New Wing) [4 floors]:
Quad-occupancy suites with single bedrooms (unsure if there are any double bedrooms) and one common space & bathroom per suite.

Yay Jones!!! I'm a rising sophomore there and have to say I'm proud of it (or perhaps that's just the brainwashing speaking). The rooms are pretty good sized with lots of windows. Admittedly I was disappointed at first about not getting a suite with a common room and bathroom and all that jazz, but after living there, I really loved how you got to know everyone on your floor pretty well and how there were always people just talking and chilling in the floor lobbies (something my Wiess friend wishes she had; their rooms open right up to the outside).

As for not having heard of Jones.. well, we are the reigning President's Cup holders and Men's Beer Bike champions, for starters.

I hope you all have a fantastic oweek! my roommate's advising. :) JIBA!!!

Welcome to Lovett, twinklestar, torrestowers, and Kjin!

The Lovetteers are really excited to meet you, and your advisors are going to work very hard to give you a great o-week. If you have any questions about Lovett, or just want to say hi, definitely pm me. And again, welcome!

YAY! I'm in Baker. This is an awesome college to be in because it's centrally located near the rest of the campus. And the old rooms thing isn't so bad.

Another Hanszen parent here. Happy to answer what I can.
I just dropped off younger s at a program at Duke and met two Rice students (they're in Brown).
And hello Jenskate!

An incoming Hanszenite from Atlanta--hey Esther and Misterme!--and it seems there is already a pair of Hanszen parents here to answer questions...hmmmm...that sounds like a useful resource.

Well, Hanszen parents (and current Rice students), I have two initial questions:

Do any freshmen get quads, or are those mostly reserved for the upperclassmen? I got the initial impression from reading what I could on the website that there are limited quad rooms in Hanszen and freshmen generally get placed into doubles. Is this correct?

How have your children reported on the overall quality of the rooms in Hanszen? Cramped and sweltering? Spacious and well-airconditioned? Clean bathrooms?.... etc etc.
