Wow! All of your portfolios are stunning. I’m applying for graphic design/advertising (depending on the school) to a few art schools. Currently I’m trying to weed out my weakest pieces (not too sure which those are). I’m also worried because I do not have many drawings at all, and the drawings I have are not very good. Are there any schools that will let me submit just a graphic design portfolio (I’m trying to find 1-2 more to apply to)?

@annay49, I wouldn’t include the drawing of the eye. If you do, I would do something in photoshop or find a way to spiff it up some how :). Also, I know Calarts and Artcenter don’t require portfolios; I think the Museum of Fine Arts Boston and School of Visual Arts are the same way too.

@pez awesome portfolio. I love the “create” piece! I am more looking for schools that let me submit a portfolio but without drawing from observation (I don’t have any formal instruction in drawing… well art in general)

Thanks annay! Oh, and I accidentally misspoke. What I meant to say was that those schools don’t require observational drawings in the portfolios. (Sorry, it’s been a long day :)

I don’t know, it’s the generally feeling. I hope i get in those, I am sitting at home getting nervous whenever I think about Parsons.lol
Nope, since I am not in the state, I wasn’t able to attend any of their portfolio reviews…
Apparently I am scheduled to have CSM interview in two weeks, I am getting nervous about that as well…

@pez- I think your weakest piece is nerds die rich. I like your work a lot. Also, do you need to do something with the negative space in the veggie monster? I dont see any shadow or anything.

by the way, I am no expert, just someones mom.

i’m a highschool senior applying to cooper union ED. very nervous about it. I’m expecting the hometest in the next two weeks.

also applying sva, pratt and mica, and considering applying to parsons and risd (although risd is so bad at merit aid I’m not sure it’s worth doing their hometest).

switters–I stalked you a bit (heh), does your kid have his portfolio online somewhere?

I also have a few observational drawings and figure drawings that I didn’t post on my flickr. I kind of regret not doing more painting last year, and i’m afraid my "tight"ness will drag me down a bit with cooper…
i got reviewed at cooper a few weeks ago and I can’t tell if my reviewer liked my stuff or not. she was really vague. she was helpful though, told me not to include a few things because they were too illustrationy.

@paintster- your stuff is fabulous. You look like an illustrator to me. When my S was looking at colleges we visited SVA and the illustration kids looked incredibly happy.

You should also check out VCU’s Communication Arts department. I bet MICA will love you too, they give out some money. Do you have decent grades?

Good luck with Cooper. I am curious which things the reviewer told you not to include?

@ Painster, I dont think you’ll have any problems wherever you end up going. Your portfolio is great, really advanced for coming out of high school. I’ve been watching CU posts and info for a couple of years now, and in my opinion, your tight and fairly illustrative tecnique could be a problem. But the hometest is where you really get to prove yourself and your capacity to think outside the box, so just be prepared to take your stuff in directions you’ve never considered before and have fun with it.

hi,
gotta gotta visit SVA some time soon.
i’m a little weary of going down to MICA or virginia. I loved mica when i visited, absolutely loved it, but it’s not new york.
my grades are alright, they fluctuate, but my sats were good so I don’t think it’ll be a problem. not likely to get merit scholarships for grades, though.

thanks for the advice. i’ve been stalking cu posts too, and that’s partly why i’m worried…seen a lot of hometests where the kid obviously had skill, mad skill, but somehow wasn’t what they wanted…
i’ll be really conceptual i guess. i’m stuck right now, can’t change much about my portfolio in the next week because i’m bogged down with school work, but the hometest hasn’t arrived yet.

Hi! I’m currently a high school senior planning on applying to Parsons/Pratt/UArts for photography. I’m somewhat new to the art but I am absolutely in love with it and know that I want to pursue it. How can I make my portfolio more appealing?

I wrote my essay on concert photography, and I put together a portfolio to go with it. Just wondering what you guys think- if it’s too big, any photos that really lack quality, ect. Also, this is a purely supplemental part of my app, so it isn’t as huge for me as it is some of you.

I’m an undergrad who JUST recently decided to transfer into an art school (I have a totally different major right now). I’m interested in doing sculpture and am still doing research on schools…

I’m really worried because I don’t have alot of pieces and most of them are 3D. Some of the pieces are still WIP (the last two will be in bronze hopefully). I’m thinking I’ll work on some 2D things in the next few weeks to add in.

Basically I never really thought I would be applying to art school since I did it mostly as a hobby on the side, so I’m new to the scene and don’t really know what’s expected in a portfolio or even if applying to art school is the right choice for me. I just know I want to spend a few years just doing art.

If you guys could give me any feedback/information/advice or suggestions of schools, it would be really helpful! Thanks.
