I think there's a way to settle this question once and for all. We need to see whether there are people who are missing forms and were NOT contacted by the financial aid office. It would be relatively easy to find out, provided that everyone knows how to log into their account and check their financial application to do list. If, after a while, we can't find anyone who was not contacted about missing forms, then apparently they're just following normal procedure and the letter itself is not an indication of anything. If there are a reasonable number of applicants who are missing forms and were not contacted, then we might have evidence that the letter is indeed an indication of acceptance.

I got a letter saying that I was missing certain FA forms.

I got a letter for FA-CSS profile, which I did indeed complete but it slipped through the system because I did not have a SSN on the collegeboard account.

Also, to top that off, I checked my financial aid application status, and it indicates that there's nothing for me to do.

I think this just might be coincidence. I don't think that the financial aid office would have anything to do with decisions.

I got a letter asking me to submit my noncustodial (divorced parents) CSS profile and parents' income tax returns even though I'm sure they were sent. Do I have to resend this stuff?! grumble grumble

If anyone with a really bad profile got a letter requesting financial aid forms, they obviously aren't posting on this thread. ;)

I got one too saying I was missing 2006 tax docs and the FA application form. I just sent them the 2007 ones a few days ago, should I send the 2006? It seems absurd, but there must be a reason as to why they are asking for the 2006 ones.

Would people who didn't apply for financial aid be getting this letter in the mail?

I posted this on another thread, but figured I'd post it here as well:

If you did not ask for financial aid, I don't think you would get this letter. If you asked for financial aid and submitted all of your forms, then you also wouldn't get this letter. I'm guessing there is a small percentage of people who requested financial aid and do not have their forms in. Is Cornell processing all of those people whether they will be admitted or not? Everyone's stats are so good - it's hard to tell. At the ED time period, it seemed pretty clear that only people who were going to receive an offer were contacted regarding missing FAFs. Now, when they have more time, maybe they are contacting everyone? I looked at last year's threads and there were at least two applicants who were asked for forms who did not get an offer. One was rejected (international) and one was waitlisted. Look at the thread called "a sign??". I guess this is not a new concept! FAF request letters get everyone's hopes up every year. So I guess all of this was wishful thinking....

I would assume that if you did not show an interest in fa you would not have a file or receive a letter. so this might be an indication for those applying for fa or not but has no bearing on those that did not request fa? agree or disagree?

agreed. If you didn't apply for FA, you wouldn't get a letter.

actually guys, i'm leaning more towards the fact that they're sending this to us just because we're missing things, nothing more. A few people in my school received this letter too and they're the people who i do not expect to really be accepted.

Got a letter, wondering if it's a sign.

My college counselor is calling them today so I'll find out tomorrow whether or not this is really a good sign. I'll keep you posted.

Wow you have a nice counselor. Mine wouldn't even care.

Haha my graduating class is thirty students, and I am the school's pride and joy this year lol. (My school is in the inner-city of Boston, has an average SAT of 1517/2400 and GPA of 2.9...). My headmaster himself called Wharton, Harvard, Williams and Yale (top choices) to put in a special word for me. Pretttty sweet.

Kids, it really is nothing. I got one as well, but it's not a "likely" letter of any means. Think about it: the FA office isn't putting together our packages, it's just ensuring that it has everything it needs in the case it DOES need to assemble our packages. So when the college flags an accepted student, the FA office can make the package.

Also, they're not making packages for every applicant. According to the Cornell website: Cornell University - Facts about Cornell - Statistics
Students receiving Cornell-administered financial aid 53%
about half of the admitted students are getting FA. Let's assume a bit more applied for it amongst all the applicants.. around 60%? It's still way less than the 30k odd applicants.

Don't get your hopes up yet ;)

PS: I'm at 35 ACT, 800V/770M/750W, and 770/770/760 for the subjects (sciences + math). I'm white
