As a Smeal Grad (MIS, 2007) I can tell you that majoring in Accounting, with no specific plans to go into Accounting, might not be the best idea. As a discipline, the Accounting program can be rigorous, and you’ll find that ACCT 211 is basically a weed-out course for the entire college of business. Everyone HAS to take it, and get a C or better, before getting accepted into any of the majors.

On the other hand, Accounting is an “in demand” degree, and has been for several years now. Also, Business Degrees in general are pretty versatile, and most graduates don’t get their first job in the field the get the degree in anyway. Coming in as a freshman, you haven’t actually been accepted into your major yet (you officially apply to your major during your second semester, sophomore year) so its pretty easy to change.

I am currently a junior in the Smeal College of Business. I am currently a Management Major. However, I intend to switch into Accounting. I feel Management is too broad, and I would have more career and internship opportunities with an undergraduate degree in Accounting?

What do you think?

Warrior, I was accepted into marketing at Smeal, and I feel that major seems like the best fit for me. Can you comment on anything you know about marketing at Smeal and is that a good major to get into for jobs in the future?
