Potential Problem..freaking out

Here's the back story:
Applied to all the UC's (besides UCR and UCM)
TAGed SB.
Currently have 62.5 quarter units.
Taking 14 units right now during this winter quarter (3 classes)
2 of the classes are going fine.
3rd class I feel like I might have bombed the midterm (took it lightly, didn't read my notes thoroughly). This is a problem because our grade is based off 2 midterms (30 MC each) so messing up on one can really set you back.

My question is that let's say I get it back and I do bad, if I drop with a W will this affect my admissions into a UC? Would I have to report somewhere that I dropped with a W or would it not matter? I currently have a 3.76 GPA so it's not like I'm a bad student, just had a misstep here.

I say stick with the class as long as the misstep doesn’t cause a D or an F. Admissions already have what they will be using to evaluate you so just finish the class. That’s my humble opinion.

I guess we’ll see what the situation is when I get my midterm back. The deadline to drop with W is next friday. If I were in danger of passing would a W affect my chances?

Will you still have 90 quarter units? Is the class needed for IGETC? Is it a major prerequisite? Is that class special in any way? Needed for honors or something.
Like UCBhopeful said, don’t drop it unless you are going to get a D or an F.

IGETC class but I can always just take it spring quarter. Units aren’t a problem for me

why not email UCSB admissions and ask them directly?

You should be fine if the class was just for IGETC. Just as long as it’s not a major pre-req or part of the core requirements. If it was for part of your Math / English core requirement, it likely would be an issue at UCSB and possibly some of the other UC’s. A few years ago, I took a W in a critical thinking course during Fall and retook it in spring and was rejected to UCSB because of it. For a simple IGETC course, I wouldn’t anticipate that being a problem though. That being said, even if you pull a C it likely won’t affect your admission. As others have mentioned, the UC’s will only be looking at your GPA up until Fall, regardless.

I feel like a C would affect me as it might pull my quarter GPA under 3.0 which could affect me if I got into either berk or LA as they require a 3.0 + GPA for the quarters after you get accepted

What’s your major?

When I was admitted to UCLA, there was nothing in my provisional contract that mentioned having a 3.0 for a term. It specifically said to inform them of any D’s or F’s and or if I had multiple C’s in a term. I didn’t get admitted to Berkeley, so I can’t comment regarding that. Most of the other UC’s require a 3.0 overall and just a 2.0 quarter/semester without any D’s or F’s in the provisional contract.

If you have doubts though you should call them, admission officers are paid to answer your questions. Also, they don’t ask you for any identifying information, so don’t be worried that anything you ask is going to affect your admission status in any way. If you’re “freaking out,” you should probably be going directly to the source for an answer so that you’ll have actual peace of mind afterward. It would also be quicker than waiting a weak to get reassurance through posts on these forums.

@dilapidatedmind thanks for the great information. What year did you transfer to UCLA?

I SIRed to UCLA last year, 2012 cycle, and enrolled for summer session there. Then effectively dropped out and enrolled at UCSD for Fall quarter.

How did you enroll into UCSD? Was it after the SIR date?

@dilapidatedmind do you know how they would feel about a W though?

@HopingtoXfer
I was offered a position at a fellowship program late in the summer at UCSD after the SIR daedline, so they allowed me to still enroll past the deadline. I was still able to start on time and attend the first day of Fall quarter, so they permitted it even though it was after the deadline.

You’re not supposed to, but in some instances they’ll allow you leniency on the SIR date. I know someone that was undecided between Cal and UCLA and “SIRed” to Cal, but asked for approval to submit a late SIR to UCLA. Basically he had an extra month and a half to make up his mind, although he stuck with his original SIR regardless.

I don’t imagine it would be an issue if it was a class that was exclusively for IGETC and not a major pre-req or core requirement class. As long as you’d still be on pace to finish IGETC in spring then I imagine it wouldn’t affect anything. That being said, I’m not an admission officer and before you officially change your grading option, I’d encourage you to contact an admission officer before taking action.
