For a while now it has been my dream to work on the business side of consumer electronics and it was my plan to do so through majoring in finance, paying my dues at a big firm, and then heading into the tech side of things when I had enough experience.

However, I'm currently in a Finance/Accounting internship for the summer and am realizing this may not be what I want to do for the rest of my life.

As I've begun researching it seems more and more evident that my 2nd choice, SCM, might be a better fit for me. I've always been fascinated by product development; by the fact that all these raw ideas and materials come together to make the products that we know and love. It seems like I'd be exposed to this process with a SCM career, especially as I climb the latter and more-so than I would with Finance.

So as someone who hopes to break into consumer electronics SCM what would be a good minor or double major to make myself more appealing to these companies? What would be a good way to sort of "push" my career in that direction as an undergrad? Thanks!

Can you give a little more info about your internship? What kind of company? What kind of tasks?

My tendency is to say that life is too short to do something that you don’t want to do. I was in accounting and found myself bored to tears if I stayed in one spot too long. I went into engineering for a while. Eventually I ended up in software QA using my accounting background. I like it because I get to work on the products that allow people to do their work. The big sccounting firms do supply chain management so perhaps holding on to your accounting and adding SCM to your skill set makes sense. That’s just one thought. I am sure there are others.

It’s for a company in the energy business. I’m only a week in but my understanding is I’ll be doing inventory accounting, making sure the amount of product we say we moved matches up with what the 3rd parties say was moved. For now I’ve just been doing system clean-up work for their inventory accounting system.

I’ll be a junior this upcoming fall though, so I definitely have time and I know a week into an internship is very premature to be making judgments. I just want to be sure I understand my options since what I plan to major in will affect what classes I have this fall.

Thank you for the advice though! The thing is I’m not sure the big 4 is a place where I’d like to be post-graduation from what I’m gaining from my current internship. I know HP currently recruits on my campus for SCM, I’m just not sure what I could do to make myself a more appealing candidate for a tech focused company like HP.

In addition to accounting, you can’t wrong with computer science or information systems classes.
