I just got a postcard for this Power up for Success program. While is sounds good its not cheap. Don't they go over the same topics at NSO (especially the one in fall just before classes start)? If anyone took this please respond. I'd like to know if you thought it was worthwhile or would you have learned everything anyhow? www.umass.edu/powerup is the web site.

I am looking for the same information - if it’s worth the money. Did you get any more information on the program?

Yes I did after attending parents orientation and I think its really for kids who are very nervous about starting college and living away from home and want to make friends early. Or those who want the jump up on move in day. I don’t really feel its for my son. While I like the how to be successful at college portion I just don’t feel there is enough of that to justify the 700+ dollars. The program is basically 2 half days with a night thrown in. He will "rough it"and just attend regular NSO.

I agree with bucky0926. NSO is great and many students don’t need more orientation than that, but if you think you do, then go for it. Some students are very wary of being away from home, others not. It’s a personal decision.
My son did it & felt it was not worth it. Things got better when the real semester started, but the Power-Up program turned him off to the point where he had second thoughts about UMass! (He is in the CHC)
I did power up, totally not worth it…
