I'm an incoming Junior and I just took my first practice SAT from the college board book and I got an 1840. Is it feasible to think that I could raise my score over 2100 or should I hire a tutor. (I would rather avoid spending the money to hire a tutor though.) Am I just overreacting- I mean it's only my first practice test...

Basically what do you guys think is the best way to prepare and are the practice tests accurate at predicting your score or not.

I think you can raise your score. Take a couple more practice tests to be sure of where your strengths/weaknesses are. I don't think you NEED a tutor. Just do a lot of practice, and get more SAT prep books.

yes you can definitely raise your score to 2100 if you work hard enough.
dont hire a tutor, unless he/she's free.

just buy the blue book and another book of your choice (it doesn't really matter rocket review/barrons/PR). and if you dont care about money, i'd consider buying "direct hits vocabulary", its pretty fun.
if you want more tips, just browse through the forums.

I think you can definitely raise your score.

My first practice test was right around your score - like around an 1860, and after about 5 more PR practice tests, I've gotten up to around 2050. Granted, the grades fluctuate; sometimes my score goes up, and other times it comes crashing down.
For instance, I just took another PSAT practice test this morning and annoyed myself by getting a weak 192. The last PSAT practice test was a 209. My point is to not get too irked by all the random fluctuations.

practice more and study hard. I started out with horrible PSAT scores and the first time I took the SAT I got a similar score as you. A month later I took them again (with a moderate amount of studying) and got a 1940. I've been studying even more and getting 2000+ on the practice tests, so with studying you could definately get a 2100.
