Someone called my house at around 2:00 pm today claiming to be from UVA and requesting that I do a telephone interview. I was still at school so my dad told him/her to call back at night.

I find this incredibly odd because I live in HK and the time difference between HK and Virginia is 12 hours. So it was around 2 in the morning in Virginia. Now the interviewer might be neurotic, or maybe he was calling from somewhere in Hong Kong but does anyone think that this was a prank??? I've never heard of universities requesting phone interviews.

Some do request phone interviews, especially considering the difference. The interviewer may have intentionally been considerate when he/she kept the interview on your time zone instead of his/her own.

Or, it may have been a prank call.

I would call UVA admissions and explain your situation. If someone there wanted to do a phone interview with you, the admissions officer for your geographic area will know about it.

I agree that it was probably not a prank call.

This Mon. or Tues. we received a phone call from someone wanting to conduct a phone intervivew with our daughter. We recognized the area code of the interviewer's cell phone as being from our state...the distance is just too far for someone to drive to "the middle of nowhere". She did have the phone interview on Wed. afternoon.

If you want to verify the interviewer's authenticity, you can try typing the interviewer's name and the name of the college in an internet search engine. We did this and it verified that he is an alum., and gave some other info. about him. She did not mention this to him on the phone and you probably won't want to mention that you did this either as it may sound kind of "stalker-like", but it may give you a little peace of mind.

That would be a ridiculously expensive prank call.

It's not odd that an admissions counselor or interviewer would be considerate of your time zone and call you at a time appropriate for you to give you an interview. And many universities request phone interviews -- especially if you live in Hong Kong and the school is in Virginia. Would you expect them to expect you to pay thousands on a plane ticket to fly around the world for an hour-long interview?

It's very unlikely that this was a prank call. Wait for them to call you back, or you can call the admissions office yourself (or e-mail them if it is less expensive) and ask about the validity of a phone interview -- simple.

I'd suggest an e-mail also with the times of day (specify that these times are YOUR local time), and days of the week that you would be most likely to be home. You may be able to schedule your phone interview by e-mail.

thanks everyone:) I had local alum interviews from other schools so I just thought phone interviews were kinda odd. But now it seems its quite common so i feel a bit less paranoid :P

BUT the interviewer hasn't called back yet...

Well you may have just screwed up a chance to interview with one of the few UVA alums in Hong Kong. Not every UVA alum lives in virginia you know.

I'm sorry, how did I screw up my chances if I was at school and they didn't contact me beforehand about the interview. Am i supposed to skip school and have a phsyic 6th sense about when an interviewer was supposed to call?

For those of you who will actually offer usuful advice...

"Does U.Va. require interviews?

No. While prospective students are invited to visit and speak with members of our admission staff, formal interviews are not a part of our evaluation process."

Don't ask us about the UVA interview, email the UVA admissions office and ask them about it. I can come up with a half-dozen reasons why they might want to interview you, but the only people who would know the answer are the admissions staff themselves.
