Pratt institute visiting day- Mom worries of her daughter's traveling alone.

Hello,
My daughter will visit Pratt for the Visiting Day by herself from her boarding school in CT and needs to fly to CA on the same day for the USC visiting day which starts two days later.
She wants to go to the airport ( JFK?) right after the Pratt visiting day. How long will take for her to JFK if she takes a TAXI? The program will end 2:00PM and will she experience traffic? Actually, I am worrying her to go to New York, and to JFK by herself. Will taking TAXI OK? Please give me some recommendations . Thanks

Try flyertalk.com for more guidance, but I’d think that a taxi would be maybe 30 minutes.

Yup 25-30 minutes. Odds are, if she in BS in CT, she’s been to NYC before whether you know about it or not.

It should be 30 minutes but could take up to an hour if there is traffic. There can be traffic at any time in NYC. She can hail a cab or make a reservation ahead of time with a car service. There is a a car service named Arecibo which is popular in the Pratt area. Car service would probably be a better idea as I’m not sure if there will be cabs to hail near Pratt.

I live right across the street from Pratt. Definitely have a car service take her to the airport, no cabs around here.
We use Pratt Car Service (that’s their name) to go to school in Manhattan once in a blue moon. Allow at least an hour to JFK, traffic can be crazy. PM me if you have any questions.

If she decides to go to Pratt, that means that in five months she’ll be living in NYC and doing things like taking the subway and walking around the city by herself. Tens of thousands of students her age – and younger – are doing just fine in NYC. I’m sure she’ll be fine, too. Instead of worrying about her, tell her how to be street smart, and then let her go.

I don’t think the OP is saying she isn’t going to let her go. But sending her off without a plan (and/or reservations as needed) to get from place to place where there are airplane connections to be made would be ridiculous.

Allow two hours. really, traffic can be crazy getting to the airport. and the airport can be congested as well.

I also live near Pratt. During the past six months, there has been a huge influx of so-called green cabs, which are taxis that pick up in the street in boroughs other than Manhattan. So it may not be as difficult to hail a cab as it used to be. That said, no harm done to have some car service numbers–OP, you can message me and I’ll give you my favorite numbers.

I think that 2 hours to get to JFK is overdoing it. The car ride is about half an hour; an hour should do it to be on the safe side. (This does not include the amount of time she needs to get through the airport check-in and security stuff, just to get to the place where she will leave the cab and walk into the airport.)

Pratt is in a lovely, safe, almost totally gentrified neighborhood. Hope she has a great visit.

If you think that finding a cab is going to be a problem, then have your D sign on to Uber. It’s a car service that you access from a phone app. You prepay and the tip is included. It’s easy to use and a tip is included in the fee. I discovered Uber about 6 months ago and I love it. I’ve used in Boston, NYC, and San Francisco. Here’s information about it. https://www.uber.com
