This year, my freshman year, I'm taking pre-AP English I, Geometry, Spanish II, Biology, and (as of now) World Geography. There is a chance I can get an actual AP if I'm chosen to take AP Human Geography. Are pre-APs alright? I don't see anyone here posting about pre-APs, just APs and honors.

Now, mind you, I'll be attending a high school that is competitive, but not with the largest number of competitive students. We're ranked nationally in the number of students who take and pass AP exams. Just wanted to give a little background information.

Should I look into honors instead of pre-APs? And I'm also taking Theatre Arts I and soccer; does this sound like a good schedule? Thanks to everyone who replies!

my school doesn't have any "pre-APs" (we just have AP and honors) so I'm not completely sure...but I do know colleges want you to take the most challenging courseload possible...so if pre-AP is considered "more challenging" than honors you should probably take pre-AP and if it's the other way around take honors.

OTOH your schedule looks really good, just try to make sure you're taking class you're interested in and don't worry too much about what it's labeled as (pre AP vs. Honors)

There is no such thing as "pre-AP" at my school; however, I go to a fairly small school of just eight hundred students. I think this question is more suited for your Guidance Counselor considering that us, your fellow CCers, do not know the difference, curriculum wise, between "Pre-AP" and "Honors." Honestly, these two categories of classes should theoretically be the same thing as "Honors" courses are supposed to prepare you for AP courses. The question you need to ask yourself and your GC is, "Which one will prepare me more for AP? Which one is more difficult?" That should answer your question.

"There is a chance I can get an actual AP if I'm chosen to take AP Human Geography. Are pre-APs alright?"

What do you mean if you are "chosen" to take AP Human Geography? You, yourself, don't choose what classes you are taking?

To Sligh- every year they choose the "best" freshman World Geography class to be the AP Human Geography class. The best students basically. This change happens after about two/three weeks.

And thanks to all of the replies! I go to a large school so getting in touch with my GC is difficult, but I'll keep everything you've said in mind. Anyone else who wants to post, I'll really appreciate it!

Your school's system of obtaining an AP Human Geography class is absolutely ridiculous. They could just make an AP Human Geography class, have the kids sign up, and then be done with it. Isn't bureaucracy wonderful? By the way, I am self-studying AP Human Geography this semester. I am looking at majoring in geography. I wish my school offered Geography for freshman; my mandatory freshman history class was Honors World History, but it was a really awesome class that seriously kicked by butt with readings. My teacher said to us little freshman those years ago, "This is the second-most difficult history class your high school offers. I'd imagine about half of you need to drop this class." We had forty kids day one then about twenty-one on day two, thank goodness. Good luck with whatever you do!

I'm a freshman also and I'm taking 1 Honor/Pre-Ap Course.
The COURSE is called Geography Honors.
but it is INTENDED that the Honors kids go to AP World History next year.
Because it is intended that the student will be going into AP World next year (we have a choice), we just call it "Pre-AP World History"

Well, Pre-AP and Honors pretty much seem to be the same thing.

"I'll be attending a high school that is competitive?" - Aren't you already in high school?

Anyway, good luck with the AP Human Geo class. It's almost inconceivable for me that anyone has to be "chosen" for an AP class. Most people in our school just sign up, and even then we are short on people. I took the AP Human Geography test by myself after self studying when our school did not have the class. Was easy enough, got a 5.

Thanks to everyone who has replied! I really appreciate it. I'm not all that happy with my school's policy for AP Human Geography, but I just hope I'm good enough student to be placed in the course.

I'm going to take it that honors = pre-AP, but if you'd like to voice your opinion on the subject, be my guest!

As I said before, the only way to determine if "honors = pre-AP" is if we had a curriculum to look at. Each school is different in how it runs its own courses. The concept of a school offering both "pre-AP" and "honors" is somewhat redundant, if you ask me, however.

^ yea it is. i have never seen a school that uses both pre-ap and honors, but some smart kids that i know from other schools were in all pre-ap classes and those classes just funneled into ap classes junior year.
