I realize that my major is considered to be a "pre major" and that admittance will be based upon applications sent forward after our first quarter at UCLA. How hard is it to get into this major? If you have a C in a pre-requisite that wasn't taken at UCLA but at a community college will it count against your "point total"? (I heard that admittance was based on some sort of point total)

Your admission to Business Econ will be based on:

-Grades on Econ 11 and Econ 101
-Cumulative UCLA GPA

In another word, your grades in community college will play ZERO role in your admission to the major. This can be either good or bad for you, depends whether you excelled or struggled through CC courses.

Go here for detail:
Changes in the Business Economics Major Application Requirements

I understand the first part where it says you need a 3.5 UCLA GPA for Econ 11 and Econ 101 but can you clarify the second one?

Most people choose the first path since it's easier and less complicated.

Second part is sort of a back-up plan in case they end up with less than 3.5 in Econ 11 and 101. What is means is.. the LEAST you can do is get a B+ in both 11 and 101 (or whatever grade that calculates to 3.3) and IF you have other econ courses that require Econ 11 as pre-req (there aren't many but they exist) you need to have a cumulative of 3.5GPA... and 3.3 UCLA GPA.

Here are the courses that require 11 as pre-reqs but not 101:

Econ 111
Econ 141A (although these require higher level math)
Econ 170
Econ 171
Econ 172
Econ 181AB
Econ 183

So let's say you took Econ 11 on Fall Quarter and got a B+.
During Winter Quarter, you take Econ 101 and Econ 170.
You end up with B+ on Econ 101 but A on Econ 170.

The cumulative grade of these three courses is a 3.53.
Although you got cumulative of 3.3 for Econ 11 and 101, because you got A on Econ 170, you end up with over 3.5GPA. If you have any other classes taken at UCLA (which you probably will, like Econ 41 and Mgmt courses) and have an overall cumulative of 3.3 by the time you complete Econ 101 (which will be the end of winter quarter), you will be accepted to BizEcon.

But why go through all these? Just get a 3.5 for 11 and 101 (that's one A and one B, or one A- and one B+). That's lot easier.

So if you get a 3.5 in these two courses then you are automatically placed into the biz econ major? You're not just considered for the major?

And since that list of econ courses are prereqs for Econ 11 it doesn't really matter what grade you got in those prereqs as long as you have a 3.5 in Econ 11 and 101?

well in addition to 3.5 in 11 & 101, you also need a cumulative 3.3 UCLA GPA.

If you fulfill these, then yes, you will be placed as BizEcon. It's not selective like Haas where only 50% get admitted. Once you fulfill either Path 1 or Path 2, then you will be in BizEcon. It's really a matter of completing the requirement, just like at CC... except you have an additional obstacle: the GPA requirement.

Correct. It only matters if you can NOT get 3.5 in those two courses. But don't get a D or anthing too low as it can bring down your UCLA GPA below 3.3, and you won't get in.

Hey thanks for clearing that up dhl3! That was really helpful.
