I was trying to get into Pre Calc class for SMC but my friend told me that there is a UCLA Extension program that I also could consider for taking. Because I've been having troubles adding classes and what not because I'm not a first year college student, nor international student, nor student athlete. I'm like way behind the line to add classes.
So, I went to ask my SMC counselor stating if I could take Pre Calc and maybe Calc 1 at UCLA Extension and come back to SMC for Calc 2. But he said that I couldn't, because there is a difference between quarter session and semester session, so if I were to make the extension class compatible to SMC, I would need to take two classes of Pre Calc to have equal credits. Also, he mentioned that going back and forth would mess up my math ladder.

BUT the thing is, in uclaextension.edu 'Transfer Credits FAQ', it states any classes named between XL 1 to XL 199 are equivalent courses that are given during regular session at UCLA. And it is fully transferrable to any UC Campuses, even CSU campuses.
I am trying to transfer to UCLA, I want to take UCLA Extension class in order to get credits transferred to UCLA, but the community college is saying I can't.

There is a complicated issue between quarter and semester, and I believe your counselor is right that you would need extra classes to cover the SMC req.

But if you took pre-Calc and Calc 1 at UCLA extension, I am wondering if you could take a math exam and then place into Calc 2. An exam test can put you there just as easily as a class. Perhaps check with the college board for one of their tests.

The math exam that you are referring to is CLEP? If it is, SMC already said no to me that UCLA do not accept CLEP test results while CSU does.

Also, I’ve called LACC regarding if they accept UCLA Extension. And they said that they would take UCLA Extension Pre Calc as the prerequisite for Calc 1. It seems reasonable, right?

If LACC and SMC are part of the same district you can interchange classes as they are the same courses. It just seems like SMC is being hard-nosed. So, if LACC accepts the UCLAX pre-calc, you could take Calc 1 at LACC, and then you’re set for Calc 2 at SMC. Math is a validation subject. Once you’ve passed Calc 1, the other classes (taken or not) are irrelevant. I mean the GPA stays, but you don’t need to worry about having taken or not taken a course. You’re at the level you’re at. So that means as far as your district is concerned, you passed Calc 1. On to Calc 2.

Just do this: ask your advisor if the Calc classes at LACC are the same as SMC.

Here’s the UCB online pre-Calc. If UCB accepts it, I’m not sure why SMC would not. If your counselor says it’s a no go, and UCB accepts it and LACC accepts it, I think you need to talk to someone besides your current advisor, because his logic is not correct, I would possibly put out there. I mean, were talking pre-Calc.

There are two ways to enroll for UCLA Extension courses.

The first is to sign-up through UCLA which means paying the UCLA rate. ~1200 a course
The second is through cross-enrollment which means the units will be charged at the CC rate. The only issue with cross enrollment is you need to petition the professor to add you after the semester has began.

As for units. If the course covers the same material it’ll count.
Precalc at UCLA appears the be a single quarter course so it would most likely cover the same material as a typical semester precalc class except at a faster pace. (so bad idea to enroll in)
Calc will be a year long course divided into 3 quarters so you would need all 3 courses to get credit for the 2 semesters of calc at a cc.

Anyways imo this is more hassle than its worth so just take the courses at SMC or another CC if you have to.

I actually checked about UCB!
It sounds good! Money is not the matter, since I’m a out of state student for SMC (3 units here costs more than what costs for UCLA/UCB extension program)
I’m questioning myself if I could handle online course. And not be lost when I’m taking actual in-class Calc 1 and Calc2 courses at CC after taking the online class.
I’m also debating to take calc 1 online class at UCB, since it is cheaper…
I know it depends on me, but how do you think?

@luckie1367 I am so going to write their names and all… maybe I should make them sign on the paper or something… right?

haha, @collegeo you’re asking the wrong person. I’m not a math person! Although I always tell ppl to augment with the free Kahn Academy.

Make sure you verify with an advisor somewhere about later adding Calc 2 at SMC, if you do both online. Personally, I’d probably just do the one - or at least see how pre-Calc goes first.

Now, another counselor is saying that they no longer accept UCLA Extension class. For UCB Extension I would have to bring course description, but who knows what they are going to say.
I’ve asked this student today and he said he is going to take one for winter. I am lost.

I’m assuming at SMC you take the math placement test, right? Are you allowed to take it twice? You usually are. You could take pre-Calc, then retake the test and test into Calc 1. That does take a leap of faith, however. Anyway, ultimately, if you can test into Calc 1, the rest is irrelevant.

Just FYI, UCLA extension is pretty terrible. I’d definitely try and take it at a CC, not only to save money, but to ensure the reciprocity with any campus. I do know the XL courses count for credit as mentioned above, but they still stink.

I want to transfer to UCLA, I’m currently a freshman and I need to take the pre-calc do you guys think it will be better Togo through UCLA extent ion or just take it through SMC college?
