Pre-Calc or Survey of Calc

I really need some advice on whether or not to take Survey of Calc or start with Pre-Calc at UF for the Fall. On the ALEKS I scored a 51% which barely qualified me for Survey of Calc which I need for my major. Before taking the ALEKS I didn't really study and it was about a month since I have seen math, but math is still my weak point. On most math entrance type exams I normally don't do well, but I do pretty good in the class overall, but depends on the teacher really.

I just wanna know how Survey of Calc is at UF? Should I start with Pre-Calc instead? Is Survey of Calc a hard class? Are the math teachers pretty good at UF?

All these questions and any advice would help! Thanks

I think you should take Survey of Calc. I scored a 67% and I was having the same debate. I saw the course syllabus for Survey of Calc online and it seemed pretty simple and straight forward. Listed on the syllabus, is a list of what you should know before taking the class. Also, you should go to ratemyprofessors.com to see the best professors for both classes. Many students that have taken Pre-Calc at UF have said that the class was brutally hard for no apparent reason. Also, many professors that teach Survey of Calc give a quick review of Pre-Calculus.

Thanks man! Yeah on my schedule is doesn’t say who my prof is so I can’t look them up. Was Survey of Calc easy? What did you need to know?

Thanks for the advice, my Preview staffers didn’t really help much lol

my understanding is that survey calc doesn’t require you to know much trig. trig is the basically the only potentially difficult calc pre-req that there is afaik.

i could be wrong. if you were talking about 2311, i’d recommend taking pre-calc.

I will say this… I did not take MAC 2233 at UF, but I started at one of the lowest math classes in community college (MAT 0012) because I was out of school for so many years. I finally made my way up to MAC 2233 (Survey of Calculus) at CC after 5 prior courses, and the biggest thing I had to worry about was college algebra. There was no trig. involved really. If it’s anything like I took at CC, which I’m sure it will be, you really only have to worry about having good algebra skills. I did not take pre-calc and still ended up with a solid B in the class. So long as you have solid algebra skills, you should be able to pick up the new material and rock the course. Honestly, if my base algebra skills were a little better, I could have pulled an A with no problem.

After looking just a little bit further… it seems the book used at UF, at least by one professor (Applied Calculus by Tan), is the same book I used at CC. So like I said, solid algebra skills and you should have no problem.

Matter of fact, [here is an example](http://i.imgur.com/tqFI4.jpg) of a problem on one of my last MAC 2233 tests dealing with definite integrals. All you math stars should ignore my sloppy math, lol

@UForBust Thanks for that, I think I’ll be ok in Survey of Calc then :)

Just to clarify, the options were Survey of Calc (MAC2233) and Pre-Calc (MAC1140)

Any preferred profs for MAC2233, or stories of how hard/easy the class was?

Bump I could use some more perspective on this guys! lol
