Pre-calculus

I just graduated from a small (I'm talking two-seniors-small) Christian School. I'm in USF's Honors College and my orientation is soon. I will have to pick and register for classes there.

With my SAT math score, USF will allow me to skip pre-calc and go right into Life Science Calc, an idea that scars the heck outta me.

At my school, the math curriculum was a joke, to say the least. We finished Algebra I and II verrrry late, and the "pre-calc" that we did was through a home school service because this was the first year that they have offered that math (my math teacher has never taken a math higher than Algebra II), and we only did the first six lessons or so.

I have the option of taking pre-calc and just playing catch up on math next summer. My question is: If I complete all of the videos and exercises in pre-calc on the Khan Academy, will I be comfortable and well-equipped for Calc I?

I'd rather be a little bit behind than struggle in a math class, because my GPA matters far too much.

Sorry that was so long...

OP, is “Life Science Calc” == Calc I?? It may be a watered down version of Calc I, which would make it much easier to do well. Sorry to hear about your high school experience. At my large urban public school, we did pre-calc in 9th grade and AP Calc in 10th. I turned down a scholarship to a private high school to go there and I’m glad I did.

if it’s not too late for you, I would see if you could find a precalc class at a local juco. Your math skills are likely way behind other premeds at USF, who will come in with AP/IB credits, which will make competing for A’s extremely difficult. Taking a course over the summer can help you immensely.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, the application due date for the local cc is way passed.
So the course on Khan Academy isn’t sufficient? I was going to try to check into taking a home school pre-calc course, if that is possible.

not a fan of Khan. Too simplistic; it’s great for the masses that want to pass, but you need A’s in premed prereqs. look into Stanford epgy, or Florida home school programs.
