Hi guys~ !
I am a high school senior intending to major in psychology and do pre-med in university. I’m trying to decide between NYU and UCLA…
I think academic wise UCLA is stronger than NYU; however, I am also aware that NYU has probably a lot more intern and volunteer opportunities which are also very important for med school as well.
Does anyone has the med school admission rates to these two universities??
Any advices in general about premed or UCLA, NYU would be very appreciated
UCLA has a medical school, so there are probably pre-med extracurriculars available right on campus.
What are the net prices of each school (and others you may be admitted to)? Remember that medical school is very expensive, so a lower cost undergraduate school can allow you to have less total debt at the end of medical school.

I do not know specifics of these two.
On the other hand, the strenght of your UG academics wil mostly depend on you and not the place.
Also, having Med. School at university or not has nothing to do with the opportunites for Medical ECs.
Here is an example of my D. that could be used as supportive points for my statememnts. She graduated from in-state public UG in OH. Her university does not have a Medical School. She had plenty of opportunities there. Since nothing was available to her in our hometown during summers (dead city!), she did ALL of her Medical ECs (and others) during school year at college. All were long term, mostly 3 year commitments. It took nothing, simple email and short interview to get an internship position at Med. Research lab at her college - she did research for 3 years, poster presentation, great LOR from person in charge. She was volunteering in her college town also for 3 years. After graduation, D. and her pre-med friends had great choices of Med. Schools that they were accepted to and some had hard time deciding (including my D.). They are graduating from Med. Schools this year and while I do not know personal stories of each, D. just had a very successful residency application cycle, matching to her #1 choice.
It is YOU, not the place will determine your future. Choose the UG that personally fits you the best, nobody can tell you which one is a better fit.
@ucbalumnus thank you very much for your advices
yeah… the med school tuition is definitely a big factor, and I have been discussing with my parents about this… Thank you for sending me the link~ Why would you say that UCLA has more pre-med extracurricular opportunities?? I know that it has a highly ranked 7th, 13th medical school, but doesn’t NYU also have a med school? And I had assumed that New York would naturally provide more opportunities( i actually have no idea…)
Could you please elaborate a little bit more?
@MiamiDAP Thank you for sharing your D’s experiences Congrats on her successes!! I was quite worried about getting in to med school and internship… but I guess I should focus more on the UG schools for now
If UCLA is in state and cheaper, I will go to UCLA in a flash. The intern opportunities are about the same LA vs NYC, so do not worry about it. Academically, I’d say they are comparable schools, especially for pre-med
My good friend’s D from UCLA is about graduating from UCSF
