Pre-med at Northwestern

Just wondering, as a potential chemistry major student, what aspects are hard in orgo 212 or 210? Is it the labs, tests, or what? What takes up so much time?

The content is what makes it hard.

I’m kinda glad this post was up cause I made this account yesterday to ask a question about pre-med. I’m currently a freshman at Northwestern in McCormick School of Engineering. I’m “majoring” biomedical engineering but I’m also going to follow the pre-med track and apply to med school later (that is, if i don’t wimp out at the end). Most of my friends who are also following the pre-med track are in WCAS but I applied to mccormick because my HS guidance counselor told me even if I have a lower GPA in engineering compared to those of arts and science students, the med schools will understand and recognize the rigorous mathematics and science courses engineers have to go through. However, I researched on the internet few days ago and MOST of the responses were that med schools absolutely DO NOT care which courses you take. Even if you’re a music or humanities major, you still have a higher chance of getting into med school with a 4.0 than an engineer student with a 3.7 (and I heard you’ve gotta be a genius to have over 3.5 as an engineer in NU). I’m just a freshman and I don’t know much, but should I switch to WCAS and major in biology? Biology and chemistry are my favorite subjects and I only chose biomedical engineering because I thought it will increases my chances to get into med school (which apparently is not the case). I’m also not sure if I’ll be able to do EDC, EA AND orgo + bio + physics + engineering classes. I currently did horribly in my first quarter and I feel like if I linger, I’ll end up with a worse GPA next quarter. I hope you guys will help me! Also can somebody tell me who I can discuss this with at NU? My advisor is not really helpful because his/her responses are always like that’s a good choice, it’s up to you, I don’t really know, you should ask somebody else etc.

My DS is a junior Chem major and yes Orgo was difficult. Enormous amount of time to devote to the class. Tests were incredibly hard. But it really isn’t easier as you move forward. Chem 350 is a killer as well. He has that right now.

Here are some of the qoutes from CTEC for 350 - (CTEC is a review that the students give the class after it’s over). And remember Chemistry 350 is a year long course - not just one quarter.

“The workload is truly terrible, and, by the middle part of the course, the experiments and reports really begin to stack up (sometimes we had to perform components of three different experiments in a single lab session, and 2-3 reports had to be worked on in a single week!).”

“This class will take over your life and make you wonder about whatever happened to free time and sleep./So much work…”

“This course was ridiculous, plain and simple. My classmates and I often spent entire weekends doing the labs which is crazy. I spent more time in this class than the same amount of time that I spent in all 3 of my other classes combined times 3!.”

If you plan on majoring in Chemistry at Northwestern - be prepared to work.

However, with all of that said - my DS LOVES it and wouldn’t change it for anything.

There is a pre-med advising office that is separate from your freshman and college advisor. Highly recommend it.

I am scared ****less for pre-med next year haha

It depends on your background coming into college. For those who are worried about performing well enough to gain entrance into medical school I suggest using private tutors. The best tutor service at Northwestern is a business known as Resonance Solutions. Run completely by Northwestern graduates (all chemistry majors), they offer a free consultation and has had tremendous success with students over the past 2 years. They are full time consultants that take on your entire academic portfolio, not just tutors that offer you an hour of their time for a certain fee. Their website can be found at: [Resonance Solutions](http://www.resonancetutoring.com)

[Resonance Solutions](http://www.resonancetutoring.com) will solve all your problems. They did for me.
