Pre-med at NYU

can someone help me gage how well NYU's pre-med related majors/ concentrations will prepare you for medical school/ MCAT?

here’s a really good thread someone wrote about being pre-med at NYU:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/new-york-university/717704-my-1st-year-pre-med-nyu-detailed-information-prospective-pre-meds.html?highlight=pre-med

NYU doesn’t have a preMed major or preMed related major…although there is the Public Health major in Steinhardt. so if you’re interested in medical or dental school, just major in whatever you like, and take the required pre-health classes (1 year of bio, chem, orgo chem, physics, calc, english). several science majors cover these requirements nicely, like bio, chem, biochem, and neuroscience. if you’re studying another science major, like physics or environmental sci, or a non-science major, you’ll have to take the prehealth requirements in addition to your major, which is pretty easy with most subjects (most majors have 10-18 required classes).

As for how well they prepare you - I think they prepare you really well (I’m a Chemistry/Neural Sci major, might go to med school). For Chem, Physics and Calc, it comes down to practicing a lot of problems to do well on exams. Bio is more about learning concepts in depth and learning to analyze them.

Lecture classes are large, but their are smaller weekly classes called Recitations where you practice problems and learn stuff with a TA. There’s also weekly labs, which range from 2.5-4.5 hours, and lab lecture for chem. PM me if you have specific questions on classes or the Chem or Neuro tracks.

This is probably a question you guys haven’t heard before but:

So I have two really really DIVERSE (I guess) interests, both of which I wish to pursue at university:

I really want to apply to NYU this year, and I will, but I want to apply for the Drama program at Tisch. However, I was wondering if anyone could shed some light upon a problem I’m having:

Although I want to “major” in drama and pursue that at NYU, if I get in, I still want to be pre-med. Because who knows, maybe acting doesn’t work out for me, and my other interest is definitely medicine. So, is it possible to be a drama student at TISCH and still be pre-med?

I sure hope so.

Any feedback would be much appreciated!!

I’m not sure that would be possible, simply because of the time required. Being a drama major and being pre-med are very time-intensive on their own, so I don’t think it would work out together. As a former pre-med student at NYU, I don’t see how you’d have the time or energy to be really good at both. Of course, you should ask someone in the NYU advising department about whether or not it’s possible to do the two together.

The other thing is that both acting and being a physician are difficult fields to get into. Acting should not be a “backup” career in case pre-med doesn’t work out for you, nor should getting into medical school be seen as a backup in case acting doesn’t work out for you. I’m inclined to think that you should pick one or the other to give yourself the best possible chance at success.

Meh, I agree with you, completely and thanks for the amazing advice. Honestly, if it were up to me I would just pick one but there are other things that factor into my decision of which one I choose. :frowning: Maybe I should just stick to pre-med and just do drama on the side, as a hobby, because most people seem to think becoming an actor is a very unrealistic aspiration. Anyway, I am rambling now, thanks again.

lol i wanted to do what u were thinkin of doing to-like doing drama and pre med lol…but i applied as a neuroscience major becuz like u said…becoming an actor is kind of unrealistic, except that its new york and they have–broadway. but only a few kids are chosen and i havent done anything in the past that would make me more phenomenal then them…so yep. also i visited nyu (cuz im in cali) and the rep said that u cant take classes at tisch and another school at the same time.
