Hello everyone,
I am strongly considering attending Temple University for my undergrad education. My declared major is biology, and I am expecting to receive the Presidential Scholarship and honors program invitation. Does anyone have some statistics on the number of graduates Temple sends to medical schools? Or can anyone attest to the strength of their science programs or otherwise describe why Temple would be good for pre-med (as opposed to a UC school, like UCLA or UC Davis)? Any input would be greatly appreciated!
Hi JPHilly99,
Temple does not provide exact statistics on how many students gain acceptance to medical school since many kids apply as the school has a large student body. However, not that Temple University especially the honors program provides a rigorous education that will give you the opportunity to get into any medical school. During my time here, I know of a few honors students that have gotten into Harvard and Penn for Medical School while also receiving acceptances into Oxford, Cambridge, and MIT for graduate school. The undergraduate sciences are improving every year as there are many things that needed to be fixed while the graduate programs are strong. In terms of pre-med track coursework, many students learn the same stuff as they would at the UCs. A nice advantage at Temple is that the medical school is about 1.5mile from the main undergraduate campus and a free shuttle service (TU students and faculty use only) is provided during the fall and spring semester to encourage students to take advantage of the research labs at either the pharmacy, dental, medical and other professional health programs. If you have specific questions, I truly encourage you to reach out to the honors program.
Note that the undergraduate school is not the most important if you want to go to med school, it is critical that you go to a place that will allow you to grow, develop, and a school that is feasible with your financial situation. This school could be a UC or Temple. Though, i truly encourage you to keep the honors program at Temple an option.
Great advice above. having hospital close to campus is a plus of Temple as noted. Good luck!
@futuredoctor24 Thank you so much for the response! You definitely provide a convincing argument. Temple is one of my top choices so I’m looking forward to visiting in the springtime. I’ve never been to Philadelphia either so that should be pretty exciting. And thank you @ctl987 for the encouragement! I really appreciate it.
Hey I am looking forward to majoring in Biology as well and then apply to med school. The thing is does Lewis Katz school of medicine provide a substantial amount of aid and scholarships? Med schools in Texas are cheaper especially for the Texas residents. Got accepted at TTU as well, but the biological sciences are much much stronger in Temple. The only thing putting me off is the cost and aid and scholarship factor in the Temple’s Med school.
Would majoring in psychology on the pre-med track hurt my chances of getting into med-school? I know that it’s considered “unique” compared to biology, but is it thought to be less rigorous?
