- Bio major, comp science minor
Any suggesstions?
Can you 'splain how Medicine and Business go together?
A physician in private practice may want to have some business skills…
In any case, no specific major is required to do pre-med (i.e. there is no requirement to major in biology). Choose whatever major you like, as long as you can fit the pre-med course requirements around it.
How much private practice is still viable?
Yea Id like to know that as well
The answer is; very, very little. Not enough to worry about.
I have many friends who are physicians and surgeons. Many of their parents and even their grandparents were physicians. However, none of my friends’ children are continuing in Medicine. They are nearly all very bright and competitive and not a one is going into Medicine. Not one.
So how about just premed with a business major? That looks interesting for me. Is it a sound plan?
Aren’t you a little too interested in money to focus on being a good doctor?
Ok look I WANT to be a doctor but if I also want to stand out from Bio majors. Not really about the money, but I an interested in both biz (not AS much as bio) and bio. However, if I am not competitive enough, choosing biz could help me from wasting 4 yrs (tho I will study rlly hard).
I also heard med schools like variety
Like my son who is about to begin his undergraduate education, when I was 17 years old, I planned to attend medical school. My goals were clear- attend an ivy and then go to medical school. I went to college, medical school, residency, & fellowship. I have had a truly rewarding career in academic medicine. However, sometimes I wonder if my very specific goal (set at a very young age) closed me off to other, possibly more suitable, options. So, for my son, I really would like to see him study what interests him, maintains/develops interesting hobbies, and plans to take 1-2 years off between undergraduate and medical school. Time off before medical school is, in my opinion, very important—allows you to pursue other interests and gain life experiences. Also, practically, this allows you to take the premed requirements over 4 years rather than 3 years. In regards to your questions related to a specific major: again, study and major what interests you. If that’s business, that’s great— plus it’s practical if you do continue down the medicine route. All my friends in private practice wish they had greater business acumen (a business background also wouldn’t hurt for leadership positions in hospital adminstration). I would not recommend a double major— too little room for interesting classes outside your majors and premed requirements. Enjoy your path!
