pre-med: psychology or PH??

I just recently decided to go pre-med but can't decide whether I want to major in psychology or public health. I would really like to do psychology since I am interested in psychiatry but at the same time I need to get into med school if I wish to ever pursue psychiatry. With that said (I'm sure most of you guys know already), it's easier to get into med school as a PH major since the average GPA is higher.

I've heard the average psych major GPA is about 3.2-3.3 and PH is about 3.6-3.7 and you need a 3.5+ at least to have a reasonable chance of getting into med school.

Anybody have any input on this?

Is anyone currently a pre-med student that is majoring in psychology? Can you please tell me what it's like - how hard it would be to get a 3.7 as a pre-med student majoring in psychology and how difficult the classes are?

Thank you!

Both majors are reasonably easy. Public health is a capped major and you need to do a pretty thorough application to get in the major. I think psychology is also capped but has a relatively low GPA requirement from what I’ve heard (around 3.0-3.2).

PLEASE major in the major you’re most interested in. That is the key to doing well. Of course, med schools are aware that social science classes are generally graded easier than science classes, so even if you get a 3.8 in psych that won’t look as good as, say, a 3.8 in BioE.

Btw aim for a 3.7+ GPA to have a reasonable chance at med school.

Also not all classes are equally easy (or difficult) for all students. I’m a MCB & public health major, and my worst grades have actually been in public health classes and not MCB ones.

Hi there,
I’m a psych major as well as a premed, and I’ve pretty much completed the major requirements… I’m pretty positive that if you find psych interesting, you’ll do well in these classes. They’re mostly pretty easy, and the lowest I’ve gotten in a psych class is an A-. That said, as whosthat stated, the difficulty level is not the same for everyone, some may find the classes harder than others.

In a bigger perspective though, you should probably major in psych anyway since you’ll tend to do better in the major that you’re most interested in.

Unfortunately, I haven’t done as well as I would’ve liked in my premed science courses, so my bcpm gpa is rather low… But as long as you spread out the harder classes with easier ones, and try not to take over 16 units each semester, you should be fine…

Im majoring in both and premed as well. My psych gpa is 3.9 and ph is significantly lower since i found some of the ph prereqs like bio 1a to be harder than psych prereqs like say stats 2. Psych upper divs are very easy in my opinion compared to any mcb upper divs or ph even for that matter. That being said, both majors are ver doable and reasonably fast to complete if you plan properly. Some ph cores like epi and biostats are only offered once a year. Psych cores like 101 are offered more often.

But major in what interests you first and foremost!

I’m not pre-med but I say go with Psych. Depending on when you take the MCAT, the new format for 2015 requires an understanding of behavior science (i.e. neuroscience or congitive psychology or somesort)
