Pre-Med student who actually did do terribly first semester...

I'm not even joking. I'll be lucky if I pull a 3.1 this semester. I'm a freshman and I honestly came in thinking that if I worked hard, I'd see the results. The thing is that I did work my ass off but I still didn't get the grades that I want. I have like all Bs and maybe even a C+. It doesn't make sense to me. I've been upset about it all night. I took Bio, Chem, Psych, and Writing (required). A lot of people had told me that first semester freshman year it can be tough and especially at my university where there are large intro-level/ weed-out courses, it's difficult to get As. I still thought it wouldn't be this bad though.

I don't even know what I'm asking here. I just don't know what to think or do at this point...

^ where do you go to school? MIT? Caltech? (Top Tech Schools can be very difficult)

Are you speculating your grades or those the grades you actually recieved? If you are speculating, and you truely worked hard, it can’t be that bad. I freaked out by speculating and then I realized I did a lot better than I had assumed for example I was expecting a 3.25 gpa(1 A and 3 Bs) but ended up with much better grades (3 As , and 1 B).

I started a pre-med once. I did very well, particularly the math, physics and chemistry. The intro classes should be easy for you. You should have at least a couple 4.0 semesters during your first two years.

But all that aside. College has turned into a business. What is the ultimate goal of a business? Money. Colleges put a lot of energy and money into convincing everybody that you need to attend in order to be a somebody. Why do they do this? Because they are a business. That is what businesses do. They are a business with employees working for them (your professors).
How many new graduates can you take and put them into the field they’ve been studying for, and they will know exactly what to do? NONE.
A premed graduate should be able to walk into their chosen field and at least appear to know what to do. You just spent 4 years as a pre-med student, you should be able to at least walk into a hospital and have a clue what to do. Instead, you major in one of their poorly taught subjects and they call you “premed.” Then you can impress everyone with the word “pre-med” who doesn’t realize your not actual learning anything remotely close to what a doctor does.

One question. If you graduate but fail to get into a medical school, or you change your mind about going, will you feel qualified and confident that you could specialize in whatever the degree is? After four years, you better damn be able too. But you can’t and you know it. That is how bad you are being duped.

Gee, Bobby. That’s why it’s called "pre-"med, as in “before”-med. That’s what the “pre-” means. Kinda like “pre-”-law. Anyone duped into thinking they were learning anything about practicing medicine in required pre-med coursework just plain ol’ wasn’t listening very well.

BTW, I think something else must be going on for you to be spamming this message on multiple threads in the middle of a Saturday night. What gives?

Bobbyrob

Premed does not prepare you to walk into a hospital and have any idea what is going on. It prepares you to start medical school. That’s all.

Sak

I have a post to another person in the same situation as you.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/pre-med-topics/815347-c-chem-i-ii-about-get-c-orgo-2.html

bobbyrob: you’ve got it all wrong.

Screw 3.1…I think I’ll have like a 2.8

I’m freaking out.

dood! i’m getting a 2.8… i don’t know. i lightened my course load a bit for next semester. if i can get 4, my cum gpa will be 3.3… and if the semester after that i can pull off straight A’s it’ll be a 3.5 then 3.7. but i’m really worried too. right now the only thing i can do is stick it out and see my professors more often for help.

I’m in the same boat. I’m TOTALLY freaking out. Next semester will be better that’s what I keep telling myself. Don’t stress there’s plenty on time to make it up. Just try a little harder.

Join the 2.9 boat :(

Ouch. Cornell wasn’t kind, huh?

Don’t give up! I think my first 3 semesters were way harder than my last few semesters.

For those who are suffering, please accept my deepest condolences.

"Ouch. Cornell wasn’t kind, huh?

Don’t give up! I think my first 3 semesters were way harder than my last few semesters. "

Not so much. Haha.

I’m definitely not giving up. Just got to strategize and work harder and kiss some major ass.

To those of you convinced you’ll make a 4.0 the next semester, why exactly will you be doing better? Something to think about.

If you are a freshman, don’t take your premed classes early, take them later in your college career. That way you’ll be competing with freshmen like yourselves who don’t know what the hell they’re doing.

Do the 5 year college plan and enjoy college while you can. Graduate school sucks.

^ Dude I got screwed at Cornell’s CAS too, I don’t know why they want to weed us out. I ended up with a 3.525 overall but only a 3.25 science gpa–[(A-) in Bio, and a (B-) in Gen Chem]----. I need to step up my game next semester.

Are med schools usually forgiving of the first semester??

"Are med schools usually forgiving of the first semester?? "

I sure hope so. Otherwise it’s time for me to find a new career path…

In all seriousness though, I think they are. No they’re not going to toss it out, as what’s there is there and it’s permanent. But at the same time it’s known that 1st semester freshman year is a rough adjustment. If you can do better from here on out, I mean really really better, you can do it. But you have to show significant improvement, and that’s not easy to do.

according to my advisor, i need to show a significant improvement in my grades to have a chance.

I hope any grad school is forgiving of the first semester. I literally got slaughtered. :(

I’ve never had below 3.3-3.5 GPA in my LIFE. Now I am under 3.0!

I do not think that “literally” means what you think it does. :D

On a more serious note, it is not the end of the world for your chances of becoming a doctor. Think of it as a wake up call - whatever’s been holding you back this semester needs to get gone sometime real soon.
