So first semester ended for me (i go to wesleyan) and between me kinda slacking off during the semester given my new-found freedom (except for midterms/finals week) and some crappy profs. (and i mean my intro bio prof where i feel like i should have gotten an A but didnt due to poor exam writing on the profs. part) but in the end i got a B- in both multivar. calc. and philosophy
B+ in both intro phys and bio
for a total GPA of 85/B or 3.0

now i know these grades really are not bad at all but i mean c'mon were all cc'ers and ( for the most part are) neurotic and uptight about all our grades so they're not ideal for me (i was aiming for an A- GPA)

so my question is do med schools give some leniency for first semester freshman year? i know i still have plenty of time left and theres other factors like MCAT, volunteer/research, etc. but i just want to know how much damage i caused myself this first semester.

I got a 3.14 or so my second semester of freshman year–no it won’t stop you from going to med school, but it does mean you’ll have to bust your butt to bring up your GPA for the remaining four years. You’ll have to ace a lot of the weeder classes (orgo), and there will be little room for forgiveness thanks to your freshman year.

any other thoughts?

The answer is “yes” you’ll get some slack for first semester grades. No complicated advice needed-see what cad posted above. Only other advice would be for you to see what the numbers are at specifici medical schools-not sure of the cost, but the MSAR will give you school specific info.

just wondering, given my B GPA now, hypothetically if i were to get A’s and A-'s in all my courses next semester, could i raise that GPA to an A- within one semester since i’ve only taken 4 graded classes (its not like the junior or senior scenario where their trying to up a B GPA from 3 years worth of classes right)?
