I am an incoming human bio major in Muir and like probably 80% of the SD population am likely to follow the pre-med path. So, what are some classes you suggest taking as a freshman and please provide some tips/suggestions regarding med school req. and some preferable series to take.
thnx :D

Welcome to the department of Biology :)

So pretty much for your first year you’ll be taking*:

Fall: Math 10A, Chem 6A, Muir Writing, GE**
Winter: Math 10B, Chem 6B, Muir Writing, GE/BILD 1**
Spring: Math 10C, Chem 6C, Chem 7L (lab), GE/BILD 3**

Depending on your APs and respective scores, this schedule may be different especially if you took the AP Calc or Chem tests.

**: for Muir, you’re supposed to take GE’s in a sequence, so those three GE’s may or may not be in the same sequence, look into your GE requirements for more information on that.

Cheers!

PS: Here’s a 4 year plan(s) for Muir students with no incoming AP units (just select your department, major, and academic school year)

Oh wow. They renamed Chem 6BL?

Yup, name change starts as of fall 2010.

so for med school, does it matter if you take math 10 or 20?
i know 20 is harder than 10

If we pass the AP chem exam how would we be able to fulfill the chem requirement for med schools? since med schools don’t take AP credit

@gravity, no it doesn’t matter, though if you plan on switching majors ever to a different science or engineering, go with the 20 series.

@lee3522, you have the option to take the honors series (6AH, 6BH, 6CH). Though they are quite difficult, though if you have a solid chem background with your AP class you could manage.

thx for your response schw1ng
i never knew med schools dont take ap credit
so does that mean i have to take the entire math 10 series from A to C? AND all of my ap credits are useless???

np, now what AP’s have you taken?

I’m not really sure how all med schools view AP credit, but some want to see in-college courses.

As such, I’m kind of in a strange boat concerning the lower divison bio courses. I would consider talking to your academic adviser if you’re worried about it.

The problem here is if you passed out of a class with AP credit, you won’t get any units for the course if you decide to take it.

I’ll try to get back to this thread if I get some more info.

Some med schools take AP credit, some don’t. You should research each school individually in order to find out.

You could always take community college classes for lower div course you’ve opted out of. (It’d be a lot cheaper too).

You must take:
1 year of inorganic chemistry (either chem6A-C or chem6AH-CH)
1 quarter of chemistry lab (chem7L)
1 year of organic chemistry (chem140A-C or chem140AH-CH)
1 quarter of organic chemistry lab (chem143A)
1 year of Biology (whether it’s the BILD1-3 or certain upper division biology courses…this one depends on the medical school and if you are a bio major, this can be sufficed.)
1 year of physics (phys1A-C, for bio majors)
1 year of physics lab (phys1AL-CL)
1 year of english (depending on your college within UCSD)
1 year of Calculus based math (Math10A-C or Math20A-C, you could also take Math11 statistics class if you passed out of a quarter of math from AP credit)

Keep in mind, even though 80% of incoming students are premed… that doesnt mean they will get into medical school… in fact they drop like flies for obvious reasons. Just some tips:

1) A lot of them don’t understand how important it is to do well in the prereq courses… You want to try to shoot for all A’s in them to be competitive. Don’t have the mindset, “med school just needs to see I took these”.

2) If it takes sacrificing your social life one weekend to do well on an exam that may make the difference between an A or a B, do it. If you don’t you may regret it, and always remember you can party another weekend.

3)Relating to the previous, this doesn’t mean you should lock yourself away. Keep things in perspective and stay well rounded with school and fun because, even from personal experience, too much of one thing may harm the other. The human mind can only take so much studying at once… same goes for alcohol lol.

4) Work ahead, you won’t be so stressed… this can make ALL the difference. Try to spread out studying instead of cramming the night before.

5) Don’t go to CLICS on finals week. Trust me on this one.

6)If you aren’t enjoying any of your courses… you probably are built to be a science major.

you said i need to take math 10 or 20
i think i have the credit for math 10a,b or 20a,b from my calc bc test
so should use my ap credit or just take the series?

I would take 10C, 20C, and Math 11 (or any other stats class PSYC 60, SOCI 60, etc) to get your required year of math.

Check to make sure what you actually got credit for.

You can’t take Math20C without taking Math20B. I know people in that situation who only had Math10C on their belt.

Potentially if you passed out of 10A,B… Just take Math10C, 20B, and 20C.

If you are worried about difficulty… don’t. The 20 series doesn’t really get difficult until Math20D.

thnx for all your replies.
I took the AP calc bc test and passed
so the credit i get it either 10a,b or 20a,b
so cant i take 10c or 20c and be done with the series?
Also, do med schools accept ap credit?

GravityZero: only about 25% of medical schools require any calculus or stats and of these 25% about 50% accept AP credit.

The general rule is that for medical schools that accept AP math credit they only accept scores of 4+ (ex. UCSD and Harvard im sure theres more but those are the ones that are on the top of my head)
so even if you undergrad school accepts 3 in lieu of a math class you would have to take that class for medical school

Personally if i got a 4+ I would take the AP credit there are very few school that dont accept AP math credit. and it wouldnt be worth it to take an extra cass just for a handful of medical schools that you may or may not apply to in the future
