Pre-reqs for as many colleges as possible, Chemical engineering

I am a CA cc student looking to transfer fall '15 into a chemical engineering program at a CA uni. My cumulative GPA will be approx 3.54-3.57 at time of application. This is from very poor cc performance early-on. My GPA at current cc since returning to school is 3.75 with 57 units. (I was told by my transfer counselor that UC's would be more likely to evaluate my upward trend favorably and replace old F's with current passing grades for equivalent courses- not sure if this is true).

I know I have a lackluster GPA, and want to be sure I have all my prereqs on lock to help my chances at UC's. I've used assist and was dismayed at the variation in required prerequisites for the CE programs. I have found a core set of classes I need to finish for all 6 UC's I'm hoping to apply to, but then there are several classes just 1 or 2 of the 6 require, and I'm having a difficult time deciding if I ought to just complete the core set required by most, or if it would be worth it to slave over the courses req'd by just 1 or 2 of them.

Should I apply to as many UC's as possible due to low GPA, and should I even bother applying for transfer at uni's where I am 1 or 2 courses short on prereqs?

Furthermore, I am having a hard time figuring out which UC's are possibly within my reach. So if anyone can tell me where I have a chance to get in, please let me know. And safety schools: is there such a thing with my low GPA?

More detailed info below if needed:
-completed gen chem, o-chem, physics, and calc series
-need to take linear alg and diff eq, c++ programming, and engineering materials courses
-non-traditional student (age 26, work full time)
-no SAT/ACT taken

Actually, if you retake the classes that you failed, then the UC’s will use the new grade to calculate your GPA. If you want to raise your GPA, then just retake the classes that you failed. For most CE programs, the same set of classes is required. You should just only take additional class if you are doing it so that you could apply to a certain school that you really want to got to. Don’t worry about your GPA, what the Counselor told you is true. What UCs do you want to go to? I can better assist you if you tell me that.

I have retaken most of the courses I failed at the previous cc. There is just 1 that my current cc does not offer an equivalent course for. I think current cum GPA including all F replacements (except the 1) is 3.49. However I wasn’t sure what to do with the first quarter of gen chem, I took it at the old cc and got a B. I took the full 2 semester sequence at current cc and got an A. I wasn’t sure if they’ll use both or the old/new one only, especially due to the qtr/semester discrepancy, so this includes both. (I got m
mostly B’s and F’s at the prev cc. wish I could fix those B’s. Ouch)

I had wanted primarily UCLA, UCI, or Berkley. After looking at their admission stats (for example UCLA admitted 9/124 applicants last year with an avg 3.7 GPA for chem e) I lost all hope and started imagining just getting in anywhere might be a challenge and I’m not in a position to be especially picky. I imagined a denial from UCM and walking in front of a bus or something.

UCD and UCSB are also ok. My determining factors: 1) I am already in San Diego and want to get out, so UCSD is not desirable. 2) my long term boyfriend will be moving with me and works in film/photography and technology development so we don’t necessarily want a “college town” as he needs some job opportunities. 3) this is more of a preferrence than a must have, but I am from WA state originally and have not been in love with the pollution/icky smogginess/lack of nature in SoCal. I would like somewhere with a cleaner feel if it exists here.

Bump.
