Is it possible to complete med school pre reqs after graduation at another school or must they be completed all within the UC you graduated from? Let's say your major requires a lot of classes and if you were to finish those classes along with the med school pre reqs you would go over the UC unit cap. I don't wanna risk not being able to graduate with a degree because I went over the unit cap but I still want to go to med school. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Options:

Take it at CC or cross enroll into at a nearby university.

Go to a UC that has no unit cap.

Major in something that has a lot of overlap with pre-reqs instead.

Graduate and do a postbacc

Or you can just do some of your pre-reqs right now when you are at CC

Honestly. You should be able to fit the pre-reqs with most majors. Unless you are majoring in engineering or something.

I’ll probably graduate and do a postbacc. Do postbacc programs allow you to transfer pre med units to them? If so, that would be great. Thanks for the advice. I appreciate it.

There’s no such thing as pre med units. Your units will transfer fine.

There is always summer school also. It is open to anyone, even those who have graduated.

@Siroucity so any pre med classes i finish at a UC, I won’t have to take during my post bacc? Won’t I have to start from the beginning if I apply for a postbacc? Sorry I’m new to postbacc, it’s the first time I heard of it.

@iTransfer So whatever pre med classes I haven’t taken yet, I could finish in community college during the summer? and be eligible to take the mcat once I finish them all?

thanks for the advice!

I said you can graduate and still take classes at the same university over the summer since it is open registration. You don’t have really have to a do a post-bacc. Post-bacc requires admission and interview.

Honestly if you want to go to med school, I would drop everything and start your pre-reqs now. No point in delaying med school 3-4 years by graduating and then doing a post-bacc.

I understand what you are saying about taking the pre reqs right away but the problem is that I won’t graduate with a degree if I do. My major doesn’t have all the pre reqs for med school, only bio, stats and general chem. If I try finishing all my med pre reqs along with finishing my major, I risk the chance of not graduating because of the unit cap. I should note that I already transferred and I’m in Junior standing at UC Davis. After this quarter I will have 107 quarter units. The cap is 225. I’ll probably go with the first option you gave me and finish as much as I can and take the rest during the summers after graduation. I won’t be able to take the second option as I won’t be able to finish the med pre reqs along with being able to get a degree. Thanks again for your advice. I’m really grateful for your help.

You should do your medical school prerequisities at a four year university, either a UC or a CSU. Medical schools take a negative view towards applicants who did their required pre-med courses at community colleges.

I know a bunch of students who have taken their pre-reqs at a Community College and are now currently in med school, so it is not always a negative thing in the least. The people who read med school applications are just that… PEOPLE. If they have a random personal vendetta against CCs, then their perspective on you may shift, but it’s really about what you’ve achieved during your time at college. They could also hate soccer or something you discussed in your essay and have a biased opinion about that as well. One of my mentors here is on the adcom for UCSF and this has been repeatedly discussed. Additionally, the state of CA regards CC classes as an equivalent to those at a 4 yr via articulation. Many people recognize that the CC system is set up to provide for the needs and availability of it’s region (and in most cases financial need) so it’d understandable when students choose CC over a 4 yr provided they excel.

Since LeMaitre is STILL the arrogant grandmother that she has been for her entire duration on CC, she’s trying to deter you from ever believing that you can be successful just if you didn’t follow a traditional path. She consistently bashes the CC and UC system because she’s bitter that her son only wound up getting into a CSU and was too “privileged” to wait like every other human being to get into desireable classes at their local CC. She also went to med school like 30 years ago and things have changed a LOT since then.
