I just saw a thread someone started about how they didn't get accepted to ucla, uci, and ucsb because they didnt finish one core class (English critical thinking) before the fall before transfer.

Well, I think I might be in a tight spot too

my major is sociology (impacted) and so far, I've only completed 1 major pre-req (soc. 101 w/ an A). I've taken no math, but my English and critical thinking courses are out of the way. I have two more pre req to go: statistics (i'll take it in the fall) and finite math (in the spring).

Am I screwed for having no math and only one pre req in 1 year?

Get your IGETC math course and major prep courses done ASAP. These are top priority.

Lacking one or both won’t automatically disqualify you from admission, but the math class will disqualify you from TAGs. It’s better to have your prereqs done by fall, so the adcoms can see those grades.

I just finished my first year. 3.5 gpa. No math course. My college doesn’t offer TAG. I think I’m gonna need one hell of an excuse (and I have one)

TAG’s are just some guidelines. TAP’s are what get you priority. And my college doesn’t offer either. I’m taking some honors course so maybe I’ll have a wannabe TAP under my belt by the end of fall.

There actually is a tag for ucla, but it doesn’t stand for transfer admissions guarantee, like for those other uc’s. It’s transfer admissions guide and it covers, well, pretty much the very generic stuff you’d expect they would look at.

Yeah, the TAG at UCLA isn’t really a TAG. No one refers to it as a TAG because it has nothing to do with a guarantee.

While only some CCCs offer TAP, every CCC offers TAGs (real ones–guarantees). TAGs simply require you be a CCC student. For instance, here are San Diego’s eligibility requirements:

TAP is only available at certain CCCs because of the higher standard UCLA wants. They visit the campus and meet with all the Honors people to ensure the program is of high quality.

Being a borderline student, TAP could have helped me out a bunch for UCLA. My school just started an honors program about a year ago and a half ago. If I take some honors course, will the adcoms take it as me making an effort or will they still not think of it as anything?

I would stay away from the honors courses because I’m not sure how much they are worth without TAP. And if they are significantly more difficult than the “regular” courses, than I would avoid it because it might result in a diminished GPA.

I really don’t think non-TAP honors classes are worth a thing. I mean, they won’t hurt in and of themselves, but if you get an A- in an honors class, when you would have gotten an A in a regular class, that will hurt you (because of the A-/3.7 thing).
