Ok...I went to the naval academy website to fill out a preliminary application. However, it said that we don't need to if we filled out a NASS application. Heres my predicament... when i filled out my NASS application, i didn't know my sat scores, only guessed on my class rank, and completely forgot to list my varsity letters. Will the naval academy be sending me an actual application this summer/fall where i can list this stuff and have my teachers recs? Also, when i send away for my nominations, how will my senators know the stuff that i didn't put on my NASS application? Thanks.

my senators and congressman sent me a packet explaining what they wanted...it included sat scores, a resume, etc. as far as i knew they never saw anything i submitted to the naval academy.

First of all, your senators don't see your NASS application. They should have their own application. Second, most people haven't taken the SAT yet when they apply to NASS, and a lot of people come from schools that don't rank, so don't worry about that. I'm curious why you didn't tell them about your letters... but anyway, when I went to NASS, they gave us the full application on our last day there. If you got into NASS, i wouldn't worry about it at all. If not, maybe you could fill out a preliminary application even though you don't "need" to. I highly recommend you start making a list of all your extra curricular activities, awards, and community service. Save the list on your computer and refer to it when you fill out all your college apps. It will save you a lot of time and worry that you may have forgotten something.

From the Admissions site: "If you have already submitted a Summer Seminar Application, there is no need to fill one [Preliminary Application] out." If you did not include SAT/ACT scores with your NASS application, send them via the codes to USNA. When they receive them, assuming your scores meet the minimum English/Math scores (I think it is 530E and 570 or 590M...don't quote me, though), you will recieve an application.

Good luck.

During the 2004 NASS the applications and instructions were not handed out to the participants as they may have been in earlier years. They were mailed a week or two after the last session.

jq722: You should receive an application package in late May or June. Our son received his on May 28th last year. You will then have a complete new set of applications, teacher evaluation forms and other materials to fill out. Some of them can be done online once you set up your candidate account.

As Megs pointed out, the nomination materials are totally separate from your academy application materials. Unless you send the information to the member of congress, they won't see it.

Since the information requested and their due dates can differ, I suggest you make one checklist/status report for each academy to which you apply and a separate checklist for the nominations. Our son found the checklists helpful in keeping track of (and following up on) recommendation letters and teacher evaluations. With the checklists he could call the contact person at the MOC and find out if the various information and recommendation letters had arrived.

Finally, realize that your guidance counselor and teachers will be asked to make a ton of recommendations/evaluations. Help them with your requests by including a cover letter with your request outling any specific items that should be included in the recommendation/evaluation. To help them "recall" some of his accomplishments and to show his sincere interest in attending the academy, our son also included his personal statement, transcript and activities records with this recommendation requests - and a preaddressed, stamped envelope. Since each of the MOC usually requests similar recommendation letters, try to request all three at once from your recommenders so that they can do them all together.

Good luck.

I also recommend you send your materials certified mail, return receipt requested. We know of a candidate whose first entire set of application materials never arrived at the Academy. Also, photocopy all of the materials before you send them. That way you know what has been sent, for sure.

My son's guidance counselor asked for a checklist of what was due, to whom, and when, to ensure that all materials had been sent from the school office. They found it immensely helpful.

If you plan on sending your application in during the summer, at least submit your recommendation requests and the forms to the appropriate teachers before the end of school. This way they can fill them out before they leave for summer break.
