Premed at Bama Questions - Ask Here - Anyone can reply

I have a ton of AP’s. English, biology, chemistry, calculus, histories etc. I have 11 in total. All 4 and higher. I want to keep a high GPA so I don’t want a too demanding first semester. @mom2collegekids

good!

so, with taking bio and chem, you wont need to take frosh comp, now pick two less demanding classes.

look at Philosophy Honors Deductive Logic…it’s very good for premeds…helps with thinking skills. If you work hard at it, you can get the whole semester done by about Halloween since that is a work at your own pace class…no final.

Also, consider psych and sociology 101…neither are too demanding, but needed now with the new MCAT.

What is the recommendation if you’re doing CBH & STEM also?

Well, you’d still do Bio and Chem, but also 4 credits of CBH. What is the credit req’t for STEM MBA for fall frosh? Is it 1.5 credit?

STEM MBA for fall frosh is 1.5 credit. With Bio, Chem, and CBH it puts the load at 13.5. PY 101 is 3. A FL would be a 4.0. Total is 16.5 or 17.5. A hefty load but crushed AP Psych (didn’t write exam due to health issues or would have tested out of PY 101) and do very well in languages even though only English is spoken at home. Right now it’s a coin flip as to what to take.

As for languages, see if there’s a CLEP test you can take for credit.

There is a CLEP for psych…so take that exam. Sign up thru collegeboard.

You’re taking too many credits. The lab reports are going to take you a llot of time. Test out of psych thru CLEP

Aren’t you also doing AA or OA? If so, you need to sign up before it fills up.

So my D just came back from the Honors orientation. She did not act fast enough and all the honors level subjects were taken up. She is planning the pre-med track in ChemE.

This is what we had come up with:

Fresh Fall
CH117 4
BSC115 1
ENGR103 3
MA146 4
CHE125 1
PY101 3

Fresh Spring
CH118 4
BSC215 4
PH105 4
MA247 4

Soph Fall
CH231 3
PH106 4
MA238 3
CHE254 4
PY211 3

Soph Spring
CH232 3
BSC315 3
CH223 4
CH237 2
CHE255 4

JR Fall
BSC310 3
BSC300 3
CH304 3
CH306 3
SOC101 3

JR Spring
CH461 3
CHE418 3
CHE445 3
CHE354 3
CHE305 3

Now she plans to check daily if PY101 slot will be available in the coming days.

She did a summer BIO 1 class at UT San Antonio which transferred to UA for 3 credits. So we figured she just need to take BSC115 lab for the additional 1 credit, skip BSC120 and do BSC210.

The scores for Cal BC AP will come out in another 2 weeks. If she gets a “4”, then UA award credit for Cal 1 and Cal 2. However we could not find information if it would be difficult for someone with a Cal BC AP score of “4” to cope with Cal 3 in UA.

Your advice is really appreciated.

After I posted, we found that BSC310 has a lab BSC312. So alternatively would take out BSC210. I am understanding from Mom2CollegeKids that higher BIO with labs can fulfill BIO 1 and 2 pre-reqs which were credited with AP scores.

You could also look at BSC 215/216 with labs (Anatomy and Physiology-- Humans) for Pre-Med first year bio. Also, remember that each time there is a Bama Bound, at 1215pm the window will open for class changes and you could change her schedule around.

I would double-triple check that just taking the lab portion of a different BIO class (combined w/ your transfer BIO 1 class) will satisfy your pre-req requirements for your eventual pre-med goal. There might be small print somewhere that you need to take the BIO class with the same lab (i.e., at the same time)?

Yes, check. I don’t think you do have to take the lab during the same semester, however, it may be difficult to do the lab w/o taking the class.

You can email the premed office and ask them.

Long time reader, first time poster but here goes…

Our experience is not exactly the same but FWIW my son is also ChemE on pre-med track. He just finished his freshman year so we were in your shoes a year ago. Son registered for Honors Calc I because scores were not back and I was concerned for his adjustment to college and his other time commitments. Later son received 5 on AP Calc BC and was miserable in Honors Calc I because he wasn’t challenged. In the spring he skipped Calc II and took regular version of Calc III with Dr. Corson. He did well and spoke VERY highly of Dr. Corson. As I have read from other posters, the professor is more important than the Honors or not Honors version of class.

I also wanted to mention that there is a footnote J on the ChemE flowchart that states that if the student starts with Math 227, then they can skip ENGR103 and replace it with other CHE, ENGR, or ADV SCI electives.

This was not mentioned in our large lecture session with Engineering Advisors at our Bama Bound so we did not realize it. I understand that the material in ENGR103 is more related to the other engineering fields rather than ChemE. You may want to ask about this. Wish son could have used those 3 hours for pre-med requirements.

This is hard to answer because Cal III does not build on Cal II, it builds on Cal I.

Also, the way that the AP Cal BC test is scored, a student could do super on the parts that cover Cal I, but do “less well” on the parts that cover Cal II, but still end up with a 4.

If I remember correctly, there are subscores for Cal BC? I don’t remember what it exactly reveals. Perhaps someone with a better memory can elaborate and explain in that info will help you decide.

My oldest at UA did take his AP scores for his Calc BC AP score and went straight to honors Calc III. He was happy he did this, and had no problems; however, he is a math major so math is one of his favorite (and best) subjects. My upcoming sophomore only took the Calc. AB test (all that was taught at his school) and got a 4. He’s a good student but as an engineering student we went back and forth whether to take his AP credit or not. He decided to enroll in the non-honors version of Calc II for the Fall and had no problem. He enrolled in the non-honors version of Calc III in Spring and got an A. I would say if she feels confident about her knowledge, she should skip and go straight to Calc III but perhaps take the non-honors version (unless she has heard great things about professor teaching the honors class.)

^ #52: YES, there is a subscore for Calc AB (basically Calc I) as well as overall AP score for BC.

Some kids with Cal I credit will wait til spring to take math (Cal II) so that they’ll have an easier fall frosh semester, and to get the prof that they want.

How hard is to be accepted to be a math major? Is their math department good?

So this is what I did while waiting for the AP scores to come out. I took the syllabus from MA126 and MA227, got a copy of the “Essential Calculus” and asked my D to go check if it was covered in high school and how comfortable she was with it.

au2bamamom - I saw that fine print about ENGR103 too in the pdf doc. No mention during D’s BB.

@NASA2014 >>>How hard is to be accepted to be a math major? Is their math department good?<<<

?? What are you asking? Are you asking how hard is it to be accepted to med school as a math major? If not, what are you asking.

Yes, there are some excellent math profs at Bama.
