First of all, thanks so much for this thread! I’ve been reading through it today and it’s awesome!! I have a question for you.

I’m about to be a freshman ChemE Premed and I go to Bama Bound 22nd-23rd. I’m coming in with some dual enrollment and AP credits. I was planning on following the flowchart that used to be on the ChemE website, but since I already have Comp 1/2 credits, I would only be taking 12 hours. I don’t want to overload myself considering next year will be a big change for me, but I would prefer to take a few more hours. What would you recommend? Also, reading through this kind of stressed me out about being prepared for the MCAT. For ChemE pre-meds, were you able to fit all of the extra classes you needed to prepare for the MCAT before the end of your junior year?

My son did.

What AP and DE credits are you coming in with?

I meant like Freshman Composition 1 and 2! I have APUSH, EN 101/102/206, and PY101 credits. I took AP Calc AB/BC and AP Chem but didn’t test for them because I was told that med schools wouldn’t accept it. Kind of regretting that decision now!

DS is a Biology and ChemE major and took everything he needed for the MCAT by Christmas of his junior year so he could take the MCAT this past January. Problem is he took the “old” MCAT as did M2CK’s son. Since the test changed just a few months ago the answers you get may not be of full value to you.

That’s what I was scared of hahaha. How much of a workload is the first year ChemE class? Do you think taking Bio 1 on top of the recommended CH101/MA125/ENGR103/CHE125 would be too much? I would usually think so but considering I’ve already taken Calc and Chem once, a second opinion would be nice. Or if not, any recommendations of another class that I should take?

I think you should take the CLEP exam for Calc I to free up space.

^ Since this student has not received an AP score, tho, how does this student know whether they have mastered the material well enough to move on with Calc II, III, and the higher maths for the ChemE degree?! This is only my opinion (no experience with ChemE or pre-med)…but CLEP, to me, is fine for electives and non-major coursework, but is not for foundation coursework which will be built on in subsequent classes. Some CC posters have (in the past) mentioned that engineering faculty have told their students that UA doesn’t really like them skipping these foundation math courses with AP scores…I think they will have an even stronger opinion against CLEP. I would advise asking UA faculty/department chairs about this specifically (not just the student advisor). Again, only my opinion. Good luck, sshsdancer97.

Well, the student took Calc BC, which is Calc I and Calc II. It would have to be a pretty lame class if the student got a good grade in it, but hadn’t at least learned Calc I. If he/she takes the CLEP exam, and depending on the resulting score, decides that he/she has demonstrated proficiency, then why not move on to Calc II (which has also been included in BC)
