premed at Cornell vs UGA

Help me choose plz.

What will they cost?

Hey, I’d like to know this too

are you kidding me? unless uga pays you to go there, cornell will be WAY better for premed than uga. go to cornell all the way.

Cornell is more cutthroat competitive. I got more of a chance to stand out in UGA tho.

If you are serious about med school, go to the cheapest of these two and save your money. Med school admissions is mostly about your GPA and your MCAT score. The name on your diploma is barely important at all.

If you don’t know yet which of these two is the least expensive, run your numbers through the calculators at FinAid.org Start with this one: [FinAid | Calculators | Award Letter Comparison Tool](<a href=“Your Guide for College Financial Aid - Finaid”>Award Letter Requirements - Finaid)

ru sure? I heard this as well. HOwever, there are many who said that going to Cornell is a leg up in the admission process. Namely, to get into top programs in the East Coast Ivy med schools. At least thats what md applicant is suggesting. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/pre-med-topics/1042367-school-choices-undergrad-reputation-vs-big-fish-small-pond-premed.html</a>

However, I will likely get better research at UGA and more of a chance to publish my first year. What do you think?

I’ve seen many from UGA going to top med schools. However, they have done incredible things and have won national awards (Goldwater, Truman etc). Looking at UGA md applicant forum, even applicants with top credentials (MCAT> 35), they still get rejected by a lot of schools compared to Cornell applicants with similar credentials, who got into top med schools. I’m leaning toward UGA because I have great endorsement and a lab that has great potential to publish first year and great internship, travel opportunity. Is Cornell worth it?

bump… …

it seems like you’re afraid to go to Cornell. A small fish in a big pond or a big fish in a small pond. If you think you’re good enough, go to Cornell. But if you think you will be at the bottom, might as well go to UGA

^I’m not afraid to go to Cornell, tho I feel like I will pay extra money to miss out on the opportunities offered at UGA. In UGA I’ll be among the exclusive students (20-30) offered the full scholarships and I’ve gotten in a lab where I can publish in my first year, which is rare compared to other labs (I’ve talked to one who worked there and was a Goldwater Scholar). Plus, in UGA, I’ll have travel grants to use them to my benefits. In Cornell, however, the prospect isn’t that certain, tho I suppose it can’t be worse. The academic environment in Cornell is much better tho grade deflation in Cornell is notorious, and the success of med school at 67%, which is scary

Don’t doubt yourself. 67% is more than one half. Since you are accepted, you have the potential to do well in Cornell.
Plus, it’s an IVY LEAGUE school.

I actually don’t care that much if its an Ivy or not. I jst don’t know if going to Cornell will give me a big boost. Usually great schools offer more in terms of research opportunities. However, what happened at UGA jst negates it. The workload is rigorous, which is okay. I like the rigor. However, beside the brand name, there’s nothing else to it. UGA offers $3000 to travel outside the country to do internship/opp, which is very good. Cornell will cost roughly 30 k more than UGA total. Is it worth it?

There are excellent research opportunities at Cornell, however you already have a lab and a publishable project waiting for you at UGA. It would probably take at least a year (if not longer) to find that kind of opportunity at Cornell. So on that point, UGA is a clear winner.

Money is a tougher issue. Where would the 30k difference come from? Is this something your family can pay for easily, or would someone need to take out a loan? 30k is just a bit more than the total for the Stafford loans, and the consensus in the Financial Aid and Parents forums is that the Stafford limit is there for a good reason. It is an amount that is not likely to ruin your life when it is time to pay back. That said, adding $30k onto a bunch of med school debt is not as nice as only having the med school debt to contend with.

There are a bunch of nice calculators at [FinAid! Financial Aid, College Scholarships and Student Loans](http://www.finaid.org) that you can use to evaluate the financial issues. Run some of them and talk with your parents about what the numbers mean for your particular situation.

Wishing you all the best!
