I have heard of the truly unforgivable curves for the science intro courses at USC( where 60% allegedly get under a C+?). Having the option to take Freshman Science Honors courses for intro biology and chemistry, should I opt for this program in lieu of the regular courses( the curves are much nicer at around 50% A's and 50% B's). My focus is entirely on getting the highest grades possible to maximize my chances of med school. I appreciate any and all responses! (:

Having gone through each of those science classes, I’d estimate that about 50-60% do get As/Bs since being average usually results in a B-/C+ and the average is usually slightly below the median since its brought down by very low scores.

That being said, if you study and work hard, then you will get an A in either class regardless of the class title and the group of people in it. However it is true that the curves are nicer in FSH and “better” chance to receive an A so since you’ve been offered the opportunity do FSH, I’d say go with it. If you decide that its not worth, you can always take the non FSH classes in the spring.

Finally, if you want some comparison between the exams in CHEM 105b/115b…take a look at these 2 sites from the current semester…the material is relatively the same for both. Unfortunately, BISC is on blackboard so I can’t show the same comparison.

The 115 one says a but is really b, they just didn’t update the title. You’ll see if you click the exam keys.

If you apply to FSH, get accepted, but ultimately decide you DO NOT want FSH --can you do that?

Yes, of course, at orientation just register for CHEM 105A/BISC 120 (Standard Track) instead of CHEM 115A/BISC 121 (FSH).

And if you choose not to do FSH the first semester but perform well and want to change into for the second semester, this is also possible. Some students are asked again to join FSH after the first semester.
