Premed Minoring?

How hard would it be to do a Biology major with a Business/Management minor while taking the Premed track?

Would the workload be significantly harder and more stressful?

Would it look better on a med school app because you completed a minor as well?

Sorry for the many questions and thank you!

Minor in a subject area because you want to. Medical schools don’t really care what your minor is.

Minor won’t mean diddly to med schools.

And business and mangement could be viewed as vocational (usually not a good thing) as opposed to academic.

And as far as workload being harder or more stressful, that depends on you. For me…yeah probably because I’d hate every minute of it. If you loved it, then I wouldn’t think it would be any harder at all.

Minor should be be primarily for R&R, be away from science, enhance you personal UG experience. If none of it is true, then there are no reasons to have it if you are going to Med. School. However, if you want to have it as a back up plan, then you have re-evaluate what I said. I know person with Bio degree, who successfully went to business without any business classes. I do not know details of his story. However, he ended up with MBA paid by his first business employment, then moved to another location because of his spouse job opportunity and found position of CFO. Not too bad at all, worked out well. My D. had Music Minor, which has helped her a lot, she talked about her loving music classes, got great experiences and relaxation and being more creative in solving problems in science classes (like Physics) because of that. I do not think it has helped her anyhow in Med. School acceptances, but Music was most popular topic in her Med. School interviews as well as her interview for Med. Research Lab. internship that she was doing while in UG. She would have not had Minor though if she did not enjoy it. She almost completed another Minor also in area of her other interest, had to drop it just 2 classes short of completion.

Get the easiest minor you can to boost GPA. What is easy will depend on your interests, if you enjoy it, you will do good in it.

What about a business/management major while taking premed classes?

^^depends on the college. At Cal Berkeley for example, the pre-biz classes are nearly as competitive as the premed courses (bcos one has to Transfer into the B-school as a Junior, so Frosh-Soph grades in Econ et al are critical). At my D’s school, the B-school offers what I consider to be plenty of non-rigorous courses. For example, the science geeks are just expected to learn MS-Excel and SPSS on their own. In the B-school, they earn a full 3 credit course in MS-Excel. The B-School also has fewer graduation requirements (courses). There is no wonder that the “networking” (aka partying) starts on Wednesday night. But this is just one anecdote.

That being said, Professional Schools and grad schools generally prefer a liberal arts focus in your coursework. Undergrad biz is considered more ‘vocational’; but as a minor, it probably won’t much matter.
