significance of minor?

I'm currently majoring in Biology, but I strongly considered majoring in Philosophy because Med. Schools tend to be attracted to that. (That's just a plus, I always loved the subject of Philo.) However, what if I maintained my primary major, and just minored in philosophy. Do Med. Schools see that as a plus? Would that distinguish me within this case? Is it worth it?

Thanks

If you love it , do it. If it’s just an app-enhancer, don’t do it. Minors don’t count for much, while showing an intellectual interest/passion in subjects outside math/science does. (Hint: They aren’t looking for a class of all robo-docs at most schools.)

My D had a Religious Studies minor (think Comparative Multi-cultural Religion, not Bible courses). Did it help? Maybe in a vague “well-rounded” sense, but imo she could have achieved the same thing with an random smattering of courses among many disciplines. In fact, she really didn’t plan to get the minor. It just kinda happened.

Significance of minor is to relax and re-charge being away from your main focus. It has helped my D. a lot. She also has developed new skill. However, it has no significance in Med. School application, aside from the fact, that D’s Music minor has been the most popular point of discussion at all of her Medical School interviews at various levels, from classical thru current pop bands to discussion of the most difficult peice that she ever played. Her involvement with Medical research, her travels abroad, her several foreign languages were practically never mentioned. D. has no idea why and would be very eager to discuss Med. Research specifically as she loves it a lot (still doing it), it just did not happen. D. had 2 minors originally, both in area of very significant interest. She has been involved with both of them outside of school. She had to drop one because of additional requirements of one of Med. Schools on her list.

There is no reason to have minor for the sake of having minor. Take it only if it is fun and relaxing.
